Xperia Z Ultra display is shown next to Xperia Z, outclassing it in every way

by: Nate SwannerAugust 16, 2013

For those of you who were unimpressed with the display on the Sony Xperia Z, this may come as good news.

Some felt the colors on the Xperia Z were a bit washed out, and many complained that viewing angles were compromised. It’s still a great device, but Sony can absolutely do better when it comes to display clarity, and they have.

The Xperia Z Ultra, the Sony device that blurs the lines between phone and tablet, has improved on its predecessor’s display shortcomings. As you can see in the pictures below, the display has improved in just about every way. It’s crisp, clean, and some obtuse viewing angles won’t compromise clarity.

The trade-off, of course, is the size. At 6.44”, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is polarizing. Sony’s new “truliminous” display on the Xperia Z Ultra is clearly an improvement, and we’ll hope the technology finds its way to the Honami we expect to see at IFA in September.

  • On a Clear Day

Just a bit on the far side of “You’ve got to be kidding if you think this will fly as a phone.”

If their goal was to make a tablet they succeeded. If their goal was to make a phone that would look utterly ridiculous when used as one then they succeeded at that as well.

  • Brendon

This is definitely an improvement but to be honest, this phone had so much more potential. If only Sony had put a little more thought into the camera in terms of the megapixels and flash, and also better external speakers, then it would be extremely more successful. Those are the only factors that make the z ultra seem like a downgrade, and imo they are quite important features. Nevertheless, I am excited to purchase mine and hopefully Sony will produce a better, more improved version of the Xperia Z Ultra in the future :)

    • On a Clear Day

Keep in mind that it also lacks a removable battery and has no Micro SD card. So, big and funny looking and equipped with built in power potential problems and storage limits. Yeah, that’s what we all want and need.

      • Brendon

I believe the unremovable battery is due to the compromise of a much slimmer phone, also many phones don’t include a micro SD card these days. But it certainly isn’t that costly to purchase a micro SD card and expand storage limits with the micro SD slot.

I think the phone is quite good in my personal opinion but as is with many other phones, there is room for improvement. But each to their own, I guess.

        • On a Clear Day

The S4 actually was slimmer than the S3 and has a bigger battery.

As far as I am aware there is not a slot for an SD card on the Xperia.

You are absolutely right in that as with all things it boils down to a personal preference, my preference tends toward a course that takes me towards fewer potential problems – i. e. freedom to put in a fresh battery when charging is not possible or replace a defective or worn out one rather than have to return it to the manufacturer.

we sadly live today as in the past in a world where waste is encouraged where planned obsolescence by manufacturers based on silly reasons like fashion or more covert reasons like a lithium ion battery slowly losing its ability to retain a charge and thereby causing us to need a new phone long before we have gotten our full monies worth out of it are either deliberately or by an oblivious state of mind on the parts of the designers and manufacturers tacitly factored into or stupidly included into everything from phones to cars to you name it.

given this state of affairs it is our responsibility if we care about leaving this world perhaps a bit better than when we found it to try to choose with every action we take be our actions ever so humble and even if the whole world is lost in an orgy of gleeful gluttony of waste and mindless consumption of newer and better to be circumspect. otherwise we are no better than the masses of people who have never and will never give truly serious thought to their place in this marvelous and grand scheme of things called life and be less than we can and could be because of our intractable denial of the fragile yet magnificent and powerful wonders surrounding us.

All the xperias that have come out in 2013 have a slot for xd card stop posting stuff that you not sure about when they are several sites where you can go get info about the phone.

          • jim

Less than half of what you say is corrent! Hahaha, makes for good comedy reading cause even if I was to just guess things and write here I would expect to get 50% correct :-)
You should stop now and go back to your plastic S4 or whatever you got.

Posted with my Xperia Z (with a MicroSD slot ;-))

Well, he makes Samsung sound like some vegan eco friendly company. I’m pretty sure they are keeping batteries and Sd Cards alive so they can make money off people buying new ones. People seem to forget that Samsung are one of the biggest producers of memory. I’m not sure about batteries, maybe it’s just cheaper to produce that way.

      • Afnan Muhammad

Xperia Z Ultra got micro sd card.

        • On a Clear Day

          Thank you for the info.

Bigger screen = Innovativon in fandroids mind. Android will be dead in two years.

    • On a Clear Day

      And pigs will fly.

    • pritish

Dude please stop commenting the same thing on every possible AA article

    • Cole Raney

The real innovation in it is that you can use anything as a stylus. The big screen awesome.

    • Cristi13

You just went full retard, never go full retard.

    • Awais

Which is exactly why Apple got scared and made a bigger screen? Totally right. Android will die. /s

    • CactusCat

I’ve run across Scroat-um on other sites. He’s def been drinking the koolaid for a long time. Only reason he’s here on AA site is because there is -0- news for the fruit company except for a few days each year, and even then, we already know what its gonna be. So to keep from going totally stir crazy, he’s come over here to troll. So just consider the source… btw, he made the “Andy will be dead in two years, true story” bs over two years ago on other web sites and we can see that he won’t be changing his nick to Nostradamus any time soon. Shoo fly, go away and eat some more Apple poo. Don’t need your lameness here.

  • kjmok

perhaps you never heard something called external batter pack.

    • Colin McLaughlan

I’ve had 2 Android phones in the last few years and never used a replacement battery on either of them. Why start now ?
I like the fact that it is water and dust proof more than a replaceable battery.

  • ProudToBePinoy

I wanna buy Z Ultra or I1, depends which is cheaper.., ‘coz i’m just a student..

  • Ranjeet

But why a brand like Sony has done this?? Didn’t the company like Sony knew about this drawback!! Flagship phone with all these basic drawbacks– I wish to convey them that competition is tough & they should pull up there socks!!!
