A little over a year ago Sony announced theXperia tablet Z, bringing the styling of the Z series over to the world of tablets. At their MWC 2014 press conference, Sony has now announced the long-awaited successor to the tablet Z, aptly named the Sony Xperia tablet Z2.

The tablet Z2 follows the same Omni-balance design language as both its predecessor and Sony’s latest Xperia Z2 flagship smartphone, though obviously with a few tweaks and changes (design-wise) compared to what we saw from the tablet Z when it was first introduced last year.

Specs and hardware features

As to be expected, the Sony Xperia tablet Z2 takes a dramatic step forward when it comes to hardware. The Xperia tablet Z2 exchanges the quad-core S4 Pro CPU found in its predecessor for a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU. It also bumps up the RAM to 3GB.

While we still don’t have full device dimensions or details on on-board storage options, here’s the Sony Xperia tablet Z2’s specs, based on what we currently know about the tablet:

  • 10.1-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) TRILUMINOS display, with X-Reality and Live Color LED technology
  • 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 8.1MP Exmor RS rear camera, 2.2MP from camera
  • Sony Front Surround™ audio technology
  • Optional 4G LTE support
  • IP55/IP58 rating – waterproof and dustproof
  • 6.4mm thick, 426g for Wi-Fi model and 439g for for LTE/3G model
  • Digital noise-cancelling technology for an immersive audio experience
  • 6000 mAh battery — provides estimated 10 hours multimedia usage
  • Quick charge 2.0 technology – 75% faster than devices without fast charge tech

Like the Sony Xperia Z2, the tablet Z2 integrates digital-noise cancelling technology, in addition to Sony Front Surround audio technology. Sony says that their noise technology can help reduce up to 98% of ambient noise when used with their compact in-ear MDR NC31EM Noise Cancelling Headset.

Software features

We’re starting to see more tablets that focus on business and productivity lately, including the Samsung Galaxy NotePro series, and the Xperia tablet Z2 seems to follow this trend. In their official press release, Sony mentions that the “robust security architecture” of the Z2 tablet keeps your corporate and personal data safe, while its multiple account support makes it easy for several users to share the same tablet.

Sony is even bringing you the ability to edit Microsoft Office files out of the box, thanks to the inclusion of the full version of OfficeSuite Pro 7. Additionally, you’ll be able to transform your tablet into a laptop (of sorts) thanks to the upcoming BKC50BT Bluetooth keyboard and tablet cover stand.

Aside from business-oriented features, the Sony Xperia tablet Z2 includes all the integrated Sony apps you’d expect including the Walkman app, PlayMemories and more. The Xperia tablet Z2 also has several special offers, such as the option to download 6 blockbuster movies from Sony Pictures and a 30 day free trial of Music Unlimited.

For those that use their tablets for photo-taking, the Xperia tablet Z2 has access to a full suite of camera apps to the tablet, too.

Expected availability

Sony hasn’t given us any specific dates or pricing for the Sony Xperia tablet Z2 just yet, though it is expected to arrive globally from March onward, at least in Wi-Fi variant. Though Sony doesn’t say one way or the other, typically 4G and 3G variants follow a bit later down the road.

What do you think of the Sony Xperia tablet Z2, big enough of a leap forward from its predecessor or not? As always, be sure to stay tuned to Android Authority, where we’ll be bringing you more great MWC 2014 coverage in the days to come!

It would be better if it got a Higher Res screen

    • Олег Александров

what for?) for lags in 3d games. full hd is just enough.
but it would much better to have bigger battery…

      • Arslan Jumaniyazov

        Absolutely this! Правильно говоришь, Олег.

You won’t see the difference between a 1080p and 2K tablet if you are not told witch one is each.

Besides, more pixels means the GPU has a lot more work to do (and you will see almost the same). SO, i prefer a 1080p display for the 801 work at awesomess, than a 2K display for the 801 work at the border of the line.

OMW CHANGE YOUR UI ALREADY!!! GO STOCK ANDROID OR DO SOMETHING NEW!!

Can I just take a moment to express how much I appreciate that you don’t describe things as “X mm thin“?

  • Humberto Hernandez

If it cost around 400$ for 16Gb i’ll buy it (of course, it has microsd, i can save my not-that-usefull stuff there, like nand backups, roms, etc)

AWESOME tablet but a fundamental question: does it still have the FUCKING STUPID screen protector its predecessor had??
I got the first version as soon as it came out especially because of its fantastic light weight but had to return it after a couple of days because it had a screen protector which was an integral part of the display (if you removed it the glass beneath wasn’t scratch proof and didn’t have an oleophobic coating). The screen protector, of course, assured the display was very much scratch prone AND it also wasn’t very slick so not easy to swipe upon (and pretty reflective to boot). CRAZY.
If they went with a normal “bare” screen, this time, I would be very tempted to get this instead of the Samsung Tab Pro 10.1 (a “feather” itself) I was planning to get. Its even lighter weight is just unbelievable… (I just hope it doesn’t come too much at the battery life’s expense)
