Verizon has issued a statement regarding the Motorola DROID Android 2.1 firmware update, after it was widely rumored to have been delayed. Verizon says that there was no delay and that the firmware update went out to a small sample of users yesterday, just as was originally planned.

If the update appears to function well for those test users, the company will schedule a full scale deployment in the near future.  No dates have been given so far.

This is what happens when a telecom carrier controls the handsets too, delays, miscommunications, & not to mention the high prices you’re already paying just to play. It’s time we switch to buying unlocked/contractless phones and choose our carriers.

Will schedule a full scale deployment in THE NEAR FUTURE???? The original plan was for Saturday.. so if everything did go as planned, then why would you say no dates have been given so far??? This post contradicted itself

@towelie – I don’t know where you get your information, but Verizon has never officially given out a date for the widespread release of the 2.1 update. Lots of people may claim to know, but Verizon has never supplied a date. And the test only went out yesterday. They are not just testing that the update can be sent out, but also that it is stable and not causing problems. That’s something that takes a bit of time. Keep your pants on. It will be released when it is ready.

It’s just an update, not cause for a revolution. Go have a cookie. I promise you’ll feel much better. Very soon you’ll be complaining that android 3.0 is not here yet.

Well until about a week ago I had the slightest idea of an update. Then here come me like an idiot looking around the internet. I just wish I hadn’t known. Kinda like getting an unexpected check in the mail.

The document from verizon said test to small amount of people Thursday at noon. Then a thousand or so more at midnight. A one day wait for feedback on Friday. And then massive rollout on Saturday the 20th

Not a cause for revolution? How about email not working? Most folks who truly use their Android phones as email devices have to regularly wipe out every email account and set them up again from scratch because once a certain number of messages come in, it freezes.

Yeah, I’ll love the multitouch browser and the speech to text, but this is a vitally needed update to restore the most basic function of a great smartphone.

I love my Droid, but if this email glitch keeps on for a few more days, I’m launching a “revolutionary” lawsuit.

i agree, it feels like christmas for me….but in that same sense i dont want nothing that will lock up my phone either….i rather it be delayed so they can squeeze out all that they can….such as adobe mobile flash so i can stream video in a high resolution….

Correct me if I’m wrong here but VZ is a carrier/provider of telecom services. They don’t write operating systems or, for that matter, very many app’s. The Android OS is written by Google. Since when does a carrier get involved in determining the suitability of a OS on MY phone? It’s the equivalent of a ISP saying “What awhile…” while they test (for instance) Microsoft’s System 7 on PC products before allowing their customers to use them on their access links….or to be more on topic, it’s the equivalent of the old Ma Bell saying you could not hook a land-line phone to the network until it had been sanctioned by them. It’s all marketing bull*ahem*….

VZ is in the wrong game here. As soon as the OS is sanctioned by the creator, in this case Google, it should be allowed. But so long as their consumer base doesn’t loudly protest this is just the way it is I guess…

@John – OK, I’m correcting you, as you’re wrong. Verizon owns the network *and* sells the phones, and how the device behaves on the network, and how the update impacts its customers, is completely within its realm of responsibility. The original BlackBerry Storm launch is a prime example of why Verizon wants to make sure everything is just right. People were in a frenzy after the Storm launched chock full of problems. And who does the customer blame? The people that sold them the phone, that’s who. People might have cursed BlackBerry for their Storm problems, but their complaint calls went to Verizon because that’s who they send their monthly payment to. Verizon is doing the right thing here, and while its tendency to err on the side of caution might bother the impatient among its subscribers, in the long haul it is Verizon’s responsibility to make sure that everything works.

I agree with one of Tom’s points…they need to get the basics right. I certainly love the pinch zoom and voice to text and numerous other feature enhancements, but I also just discovered what appears to be a pretty widespread problem with Bluetooth music streaming. If you haven’t tried this, do. Music plays and regularly drops out (skips). I have high hopes to upgrade my in-car audio and incorporate BT, but basic test to my PC audio showed the problem. A quick search showed how wide-spread it is. It makes the Droid unusable as a music player…and that’s a big miss. I hope 2.1 has a BT fix as part of the upgrade or this device will probably have to go.

I dont know about anyone else, but I am getting fed up with the phone. It does some cool things, but it has issues with alot of the basic ones. Sometimes emails just stop coming in. I used to have a problem with the device not vibrating when I received a new email if i had it on vibrate. Every now and then now its on a 20 minute delay, or worse. I should not have to keep going in to the gmail app and click “refresh” to see if there are new emails. It also erases texts after a month or so even when i ask it not to do such a thing. The lack of Adobe Flash is absurd at this point. This device was marketed with the promise of that software. I understand none of this is really Verizon’s fault, but something needs to be done to get this device to work properly and deliver on the promises it made
