There’s a new update available for the Motorola Droid Bionic, but, unfortunately for Verizon customers that own the device, it’s not the Ice Cream Sandwich update they’ve been waiting for. Some Droid Bionic users can reportedly download update 5.9.905 right away, and just in case you’re not able to get it, Droid-Life has the zip file for you.

According to the same publication, this week’s 5.9.905 release is just a small soak test, with the full roll-out expected to take place next week at the latest. So why should you hurry to download it? The update is going to offer you a bunch of fixes and improvements – here’s what you’re getting:

  • Recalibrated volume of the call connect and disconnect tones to be more comfortable for Bluetooth users
  • Improved Visual Voice Mail to ensure delivery of a notification to the Status bar
  • Reduced data stalls to improve 4G LTE data connectivity.

The last one should definitely be a good reason to apply the 5.9.905 update as soon as possible. As for that elusive ICS update you’re waiting for, hang in there, as we’re going to bring you more details about its roll out as soon as we have them.

The zip file is 902 not 905

I remember reading somewhere that Verizon and/or Motorola have a weird naming protocol. The latest update is named using the current version that should be running on a device before the update is applied. So in other words, your device needs to be running 5.9.902 in order to apply the 5.9.905 update. The update for 5.9.905 is then named 5.9.902. Strange to me, but I remember reading this when the last update was released and verified it during my own update process.

axtually the 905 is really 892 in the form of 902 but then its 905.

After the update, my data connection is worse than ever. As soon as I open Google Maps or Foursquare, I lose my data connection. And if it comes back in a few minutes, I’ll only have it for 10 seconds or so. The data connection is soooo bad I’m probably going to get a new phone soon.

I downloaded the update and about two hours after it had finished my battery died. Now it won’t turn back on, any ideas?
