Verizon Galaxy Nexus Gets First Stock Android 4.3 JSS15J ROM

July 24, 2013

We just reported that factory images are available for nearly all Nexus devices. If you hadn’t noticed, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and Sprint Galaxy Nexus weren’t included. If you have the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, you’re used to being treated like the red-headed step-child of the Nexus family. Your updates are always few and far between, sometimes even being 4 updates behind your cousins.

Thanks to talented Android developers, you too can have an “OTA like” Android 4.3 ROM for your Verizon Galaxy Nexus. The ROM is built straight from AOSP without any additions giving users what would eventually be rolled out to them in the future. Trying to be as close to stock Android as possible and provide that ‘”OTA like” experience, this ROM does not come rooted. However, you can easily root this ROM if you so desire by flashing a zip via your favorite recovery. The developer is reporting that everything is working hardware wise with the ROM. However, there is a small bug where Google Keep force closes. The developer promises it will be fixed via flashable zip very soon. To get started head on over to the official thread on RootzWiki.

So, rejoice Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners! Enjoy Android 4.3 with the rest of the Nexus bunch or you can play it cool and wait until 2014. Only kidding…

If anyone actually tries this, please tell me. I really want to but as usual I’m skeptical…

It’s great :D Seems a bit faster than stock 4.2.2

        • Ben Schoon

Awesome. My Gnex has become laggy. Maybe this will help!

          • Gnex

Camera rotation isn’t very laggy and scrolling through the app/widget drawer is much faster. Just do a clean flash and you’ll be fine.

            • Ben Schoon

I’m trying to right now actually but it’s my first time and I’m not sure how. Trying to be taught be someone.

            • Gnex

Do you have a custom recovery installed?

            • Ben Schoon

Nothing custom at all. I love stock, but I really want 4.3

            • Gnex

              Windows or Mac?

            • Ben Schoon

              Windows.
I actually just unlocked my bootloader but I don’t quite understand how to flash the ROM

            • Gnex

Do you have the full Android SDK installed or did you use some kind of auto-unlock tool for the bootloader?

            • sggodsell

Just don’t forget to unlock your boot loader. Use the following command:
              fastboot oem unlock

I finished. Got cyanogen mod now so I can get the update that way

I dirty flashed over his last build and many before that.

Feels quite snappy in performance. meta data flowing on blue tooth, although it is still not working with my fitbit app, but i suspect that’s the app.

Very happy to have it already. Sort of feels like a new phone, without being a new phone.

        • Ben Schoon

          Thanks!
I plan on doing that tomorrow!!

          • AnotherAndroidKid

I have since flashed the root zip and all is well.

Regarding my fitbit, the issue is the app, not the phone or 4.3. Haven’t tried Keep fix yet.

Not sure if this happened on 4.2.2 but the clock now hides in the status bar on the lock screen. Like I said, never noticed before so might not be news.

I do plan a full wipe install tonight after i get home just to start fresh. but even with the dirty from his other versions, i’m very happy with how fast multitasking is and such.

Early 2014 would be giving VZW way too much credit. If they ever roll out 4.3 to the GNex, it probably won’t be until like April. One of the many reasons why I do not plan on renewing my contract this fall…

GS4 at&t users can download the update that’s what I’m doing now

I bought a Galaxy Nexus specifically because it was touted as the flagship phone for Google and it would be the first to get operating system updates. Also because it was the only phone with a “pure” Android operating system (minimal design changes from Verizon). Was I wrong on both counts? Is there any phone on the horizon that will fulfill these wishes, or should I just order a phone directly from Google and switch carriers? I really dread that 2nd option, I’ve been under the impression that my data coverage would be far worse if I didn’t have Verizon (still unlimited, though I rarely use more than 2.5G / month).

Stop your contracts with shitty, Phone-remaking carriers like Verizon, or AT-T. Seriously, what the fuck..

In EU, there’s no such bullshit in any carrier.
