We often talk about the latest and greatest in terms of smartphones and tablets, however while that is a nice category to fall into when making a purchase, there are also the budget devices. You know, the ones that you can buy for little or nothing and while not the fanciest — they still serve their purpose. Anyway, on this note, US Cellular has recently released one such device.

The handset is the Huawei Ascend Y. US Cellular announced the handset with an on-contract price of $24.99, however a visit to the carriers website is showing something a bit nicer — an on-contract price of just one penny. Not to mention, those willing to shell out a bit more and avoid the contract will only have to pay $99.99.

The device is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and otherwise sporting specs to include a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 800MHz processor, microSD card slot, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 1400 mAh battery and a 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera. And just to add a small bonus, the handset ships with a 2GB microSD card.

So how about it, any takers?
