Update: Rogers HTC Magic upgrade offer

Update: Rogers HTC Magic upgrade offer

It was reported a few days ago that Rogers would be allowing HTC Dream owners the chance to upgrade to an HTC Magic due to the fact that the Dream would not get an OS update past it’s current iteration of 1.5.  This was great news but the details were scarce at the time and there was uncertainty in the terms.  It is now being reported that the offer does include a free upgrade, but with a small catch.  Customers who opt for the upgrade will automatically have their contract renewed for the Canadian standard of 3 years, which turns out to be about a 7 month extension for most Dream owners.  Hit the jump for the complete terms and conditions of this offer as well as a look at the key features customers can expect when they upgrade from 1.5 to 2.1.

Exact terms and conditions are as follows:

  • Current Rogers customers who activated a new Rogers HTC Dream through Dec. 31, 2009 – either through upgrade or a new activation – may upgrade that device to an HTC Magic for a limited time.
  • Upgrades must be done through Customer Care (1-888-Rogers1) or through Rogers.com (existing 3yr data plan required for online upgrades, instructions below). This special upgrade offer does not apply at retail.
  • This limited-time upgrade is available between January 12 and January 26 only.
  • The $79 upgrade cost of the device, plus the $35 administration fee are being waived. Customers who choose to take advantage of this offer get a $599 phone for $0 with the renewal of a three-year term from the date of the upgrade
  • The upgrade is completely optional. Customers who choose to can stick with their HTC Dreams and remain in their current contracts

It has also been confirmed by a Rogers customer who has already gone through the upgrade process that Rogers will allow customers to keep their HTC Dream.  For all of you on the fence about whether the lack of a physical keyboard is worth the upgrade to 2.1, here is a list of key features that are included in Android 1.6 to 2.1 that Dream users are currently and will be missing out on:

  • An improved Android Market experience.
  • An integrated camera, camcorder, and gallery interface.
  • Gallery now enables users to select multiple photos for deletion.
  • Updated Voice Search, with faster response and deeper integration with native applications, including the ability to dial contacts.
  • Updated search experience to allow searching bookmarks, history, contacts, and the web from the home screen.
  • Updated Technology support for CDMA/EVDO, 802.1x VPN, Gestures, and a Text-to-speech engine
  • Speed improvements for searching, the camera.
  • Optimized hardware speed
  • Support for more screen sizes and resolutions
  • Revamped UI
  • New browser UI and HTML5 support
  • New contact lists
  • Better white/black ratio for backgrounds
  • Improved Google Maps 3.1.2
  • Microsoft Exchange support

If you plan to upgrade let us know how your experience goes with the Rogers customer service team and enjoy the new features that will be upon you soon!

When I was doing research prior to purchasing my dream, no where did it say that the dream wouldn’t be capable of an OS upgarde….all I saw was how android can be updated etc and how cool of an experience it would be. I can’t help but feel very disappointed by this seeing as I have already spent money on a bigger battery and accesories for my dream. I was of the opinion the the magic and dream were similar except for the physical keyboard. Add to this with the very short amount of time they are giving us to decide on an upgrade….not very cool at all.

Called Rogers customer service (888-Rogers1); rep. said Rogers would mail me the replacement HTC Magic and I would receive it in 3-5 business days. He also mentioned that I can keep the current HTC Dream which I am currently using. We’ll see in 3-5 business days I guess.

I agree, but that often happens with 1st generation phones, and especially 1st generation software. To me it would be a no brainer as the improvements over 1.5 are key features that I need. Which way are you leaning?

  • Lyndon Boychuk

I’ll probably stick with my dream. I prefer the seperate keyboard to allow for a larger viewing area. As much as I like cool new technology, sometimes it’s better to let others be the guinea pigs. Once it is proven stable and without too many flaws, I might look into it once my contract is up. Besides….my dream has been good to me, and with my luck I’d end up getting a magic that will be defective…lol. A cool idea would be for them to create a dream style device, but with a seperate touch screen to use as a virtual keyboard….how sweet would that be?

  • Lyndon Boychuk

If we are able to keep our dream, does that mean we also have the option of using either phone? What I am getting at is can we swap the sim card back and forth between phones? Because if say I did decide to go for the upgrade, it would be comforting to know that I could go back to using my dream if I’m not satisfied with the magic and it’s virtual keyboard.

I would think that would be the case, but with Sprint here in the U.S. in order to switch SIM cards, you are forced to go through customer service to re-activate the device you want to move it to.

Called rogers last night and yep….get to keep my dream. And they confirmed that I can use either phone by just swapping out the sim card. Glad I got the dream now….2 phones for the price of one.

i was a matter of minutes late finding out about this offer. i read about it on another site and called rogers sales. they put me on hold for tech support. while waiting forever i found this site to see that the offer ended on january 26th. it’s after 1am now (27th).

so, i am stuck with a phone with no chance of going to 2.0…and also with no data for up to 24 hours after getting the patch to fix the 911 problem.
