Historically, the process for attaining that validating blue sticker next to your Twitter handle was a little bit vague. There wasn’t really a formal procedure to request a verified account, but as of today that murkiness is in the past. Twitter has announced that they have created an online application process that makes it possible to request account verification.

Naturally, the verified user status began as a way to filter out genuine celebrities from imposter accounts. As the social network has grown, however, verified accounts have become necessary for a wider variety of people. These include prominent businessmen and women, publishing organizations, musical groups, fashion icons, government figures, career journalists, athletes, and so on.

Streamlining the process at this date seems like a pretty intuitive move. However, convenience isn’t the only objective that Twitter has in mind. The platform is hoping to increase the number of verified users across the board, In theory, this would create a larger number of influential ‘hubs’ that would enable end users to more quickly connect with people that they’re interested in following.

What do you think of Twitter opening up a formal method to request account verification? Is this opening up the floodgates to a deluge of frivolous applications or a necessary adaptation to the current social media environment?
