NitroDesk launches TouchDown Exchange client for Android

NitroDesk, a company that specializes in web-services, has just released TouchDown – the first Microsoft Exchange client for the Android OS. TouchDown, unlike other released exchange services for Android, will allow users to access their email, contacts, and calendar information on their Exchange servers. NitroDesk assures users that TouchDown is secure, and that the TouchDown will be the only application necessary to ensure the process on both the mobile and server-side.

In addition to allowing users to fetch data from the server, TouchDown also allows users to set their devices to periodically check for updates. TouchDown is currently available direct from NitroDesk for the price of $29.99. A free trial is also available.

    so excited to see this. unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me. could be my corporate exchange server, but i get a connection error.

  • http://www.nitrodesk.com NitroDesk Inc.

    Just so you know, you can still email us for support when evaluating the product.. we are more than glad to help out.

    If you email us at the support alias, we would be glad to help you out.
    However, before you do that, you can quickly take a look at the faq page to see if you are missing the basics..

    http://www.nitrodesk.com/dk_touchdownFAQ.aspx

    things to remember:
    1. Microsoft exchange version should be 2007 SP1
    2. User ID is normally your email
    3 Server name is usually the OWA server name.
    4. You receive email from the time you perform the first refresh on the device (If you change your settings, you need to refresh at least once.)

    thanks for the encouraging words..
    -NitroDesk team

    Nitro….

    I keep getting an error that says ‘attr value delimiter missing’ What does this mean?

  • http://www.nitrodesk.com NitroDesk Inc.

    Did you get the answer to this? Normally this happens when you are trying to connect to exchange server 2003. you can confirm the version by opening the OWA page. While 2007 Sp1 is the currently supported exchange, 2003 support is something that is planned for the near future..
    -NitroDesk team

  • Me

    Thanks. I didn’t get an answer, but I asked here at work and they tell me we use 2007, but they aren’t sure if it’s SP1. I am guessing it’s not and that is the problem.

  • Brice Bradford

    This is fantastic news, hurray!!

    I imagine creating software for an exchange server has a few similarities to MS Sync Center. Anything in the works to be able to sync Outlook Contacts, Calender and E-mail?

    Thanks!

  • Jorge Tobias

    NitroDesc,

    My app seems to work almost fine…with exchange 2007 but i can not sync becaused an error says “Non trusted server certificate for operation” Subscriber…”

    when these happens in a regular browser i just click on “accept non trusted certificate”….

    what can i do here ?

  • S Choudhury

    Works excellent! Great job. Quite a feature rich application, and most importantly works VERY reliably! Kudos. Look forward to Push Email support as well as a way to scroll through Contacts using predictive text input.

    Touchdown is definitely significantly better than the other apps I tried!

  • http://www.nitrodesk.com NitroDesk Inc.

    @Jorge,
    It looks like SSL is enabled on your site, but without a proper certificate.You have two options:
    1. Try without SSL (second tab in settings, uncheck Use SSL)
    if you can login to OWA with the address starting http:// instead of https://, this might work.
    2. Convince your IT department to ensure that the certificate used on the OWA site is a proper one.

    If you are unable to do either, do write to us at support to let us know. We shall investigate to see if there are ways to get around this anyway.

    @me,
    Would you mind emailing us at support? perhaps we could take this up offline..

    @brice,
    What type of an account on the server side? wasnt really clear on the “able to sync Outlook Contacts, Calender and E-mail”..

    Will it support more then 1 exchange account ?

    As I know iphone and windows mobile only support 1 exchange account.

  • Icer5k

    For those of you with the ‘attr value delimiter missing’ error, make sure you can access Exchange.asmx. We are using ISA 2006 and didn’t allow access to that file. You can check using the following URL:

    https://owa.yourdomain.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx

    Replace owa.yourdomain.com with the correct domain.

  • Michael Kinney

    Company is running exchange 2007, i’m confirming with the exchange admin if it’s sp1. but toggling the 2003 option fixed the ‘attr value delimiter missing’ i was getting. And now i get work email.

    Thanks! i needed this ap. I recommend getting this up on the Android market as a ‘Demo’ There is another developer out their doing the same app, but i haven’t had a chance to POC theirs yet.

    Great job!

  • Chuck Rhodes

    First let me say that I was thrilled to see an effort being made to include Exchange 2003 access. I was beginning to fear that software developers would forget about it, and working for a cheap company with no plans to upgrade to 2007, I was running out of options.

    That being said, I am running into a problem when syncing. It begins to check the folders, and then the bottom of the screen fills with scattered square boxes. No sync is then made at that point.

  • Brendan Smith

    What is the time lag in getting emails to the phone from the server. I want the G1 but want to make sure the response time is good. I have the Dash with Windows Mobil and I get emails on my phone sooner than my desk top most times. Is this product the same?

  • Buzz Myers

    Does anyone have any experience with the following error?

    Exchange 2003

    Initializing connection…
    Initializing 1 of 1 (Inbox)
    Error
    Not trusted server certificate: Exception performing request

    my owa is not standard
    https://portal.mydomain.com/https/extangeserver.mydomain.com/extange

  • http://www.nitrodesk.com NitroDesk Inc.

    @Buzz,
    That non standard URL probably will not work, since we currently look for http://www.mydomain.com/exchange or http://www.mydomain.com/owa for WebDav style access (2003 mode)

    @Brendan
    We normally use a 15 minute polling time, so statistically speaking, the lag is on an average 7.5 minutes (sometimes we get mail on the device before the pc). Push mode is something which we will start investing in a little later.

    @chuck,
    This is normally the symptom displayed when you are trying to access a 2003 server (or 2007 without EWS enabled) in 2007 mode. If you get in touch with us at support, we can help you out..

    @michael,
    We have released a Free Edition on market, which allows very limited read only access, which we think might still be useful to people not willing to pay the price. However, if you are a licensed user, the market version will perform exactly like the live version. So you can take updates from the market once you have evaluated using the version from the site.

    sorry, we havent gotten notifications for a while, so forgot to check back here. As a rule, please get in touch with us at support for quicker resolutions (Dont be shy even if you haven’t purchased yet, money is not the only thing we care about :-) ).

    i am getting a “attr value delimiter missing!(START_TAG @2:1″ error. do not know what to do.

    My company uses exchange 2007..not sure about the service pack.

    Also, the certificate used by my company has not been issued by a known authority.

    Please help…i am useless without my Exchange Server!!!

  • AK

    I keep getting “440 login timeout” message. I am using the trial version
    Thanks

  • Jason

    When I refresh my inbox it updates my calendar but gives me an error when it tries to download my e-mails. Has anyone seen this issue? The error does not provide any additional information.
    Thanks

  • http://www.nitrodesk.com NitroDesk Inc.

    Please email us at support if these problems persist, and we can get you going!

    @abhishek,
    This may be because you may not have exchange EWS enabled on the server. you may be better off trying with Exchange 2003 mode.
    If you check on Fetch And Trust Certificates, the certificate will be ignored.

    @ak,
    This is because you are probably entering the credentials wrong. If you login to OWA normally with DOMAIN\USERID, you should enter USERID and DOMAIN separately in the first tab. Also, make sure your pasword hasnt changed

    @Jason,
    the problem might have to do with ISA server installed on your server. Would help if you can email us with the details

    We have also a configuration guide located at http://www.tinyurl.com/tdstart
    This is a PDF file, so please use a computer to open this link.

    I see the calendar items and contacts but no e-mail.

  • Daniel Simpson

    Can you help…our Messaging team has given me what you call a non-standard URL to get through our reverse proxy.

    It isn’t in this formt…but it is close?
    (http://www.mydomain.com/exchange or http://www.mydomain.com/owa)

    We are using Exchange 2003 SP2. Will this work for your application?

  • Tyler

    This works great! We had everything setup previously to work with our windows mobile phones. If you are switching from windows mobile, you don’t need to change anything on your server.

    One thing i noticed was that might be helpful to others was that the user id was not my email address, it was my login for my computer. Nitro was right that the userid and domain need to be seperate, and it isn’t like logging in to owa.

    @shobbow… the instructions say that syncing will only sync emails going forward…

    @Daniel Simpson… You don’t need to include the /owa, or the http://. just try http://www.mydomain.com, the app will do the rest.

  • Frank Silano

    Very nice. I think I am going to buy the full version. I have been using K-9 but it’s so quirky and built on the the stock Android email app and POP/IMAP. This seems to work much better and syncs with my calendar which is nice. Good job guys. :)

    Hi.

    I’ve been using the full version of Touchdown for over 3 months now. I’m very satisfied with the product and the upgrades.

    However, I’ve been trying to get the Push feature to work and it hasn’t. In a recent upgrade e-mail, you noted that some users may require to enter a NT Domain name in the Domain Name field to get ActiveSync to recognize the account. What do you mean by the “NT Domain name”? We are running Exchange Server 2003, with ActiveSync installed.

  • Robert

    For me I had no alias on a 2003 logon but added /exchange at the end of the domain and it worked fine. Sadly I installed this program before a 4-day weekend when I will NOT be checking my mail, ha!

  • Jonas

    Hello,

    I am using the trial version, with having the complete one afterwards, if I can get it to work.

    I am using OWA with Exchange 2003. I am getting a 440 login timeout error. Although I only input my USERID at the OWA prompt, I have tried as Login ID all of: “USERID”, “DOMAIN\USERID”, and “USERID@company.com”, as that is the login for the LCS. With all of them I get a 440 login timeout error.

    On the other hand, on the third tab, when selecting which folders to synchronize, I can see all of my folders, so I don’t know what the problem might be.

    Best Regards,

    Jonas.

  • Thomas Root

    [225]hostname in certificate didn’t match

    Tried all the options…“USERID”, “DOMAIN\USERID”, and “USERID@company.com” How do I trouble shoot this?

    Thanks for your help!

    just like to say touchdown is great however it would be sensational if it had built in spell check! is this part of a future roll out? is there something else that can be used?

  • Steinar Sundberg

    Absolutly great.
    Have tried other exchange apps for the Android platform, this is in another division than the rest.
    Easy to set up ,easy to use :)
    Good value for money , keep the good work going :)

  • Chris D

    I have been running the trial for the last 2 days with the Motorola corporate servers, and after I realised I needed to accept Certificates, it has just worked flawlessly. Mails reach my phone before they land in outlook on my desktop. Great application, and very nicely executed. lots of options for how you want notifications to be received etc…
    I will be buying the licience for this.

    Good job guys.

  • John Karter

    I installed TouchDown yesterday and since tried to get it to work with our Exchange-Server.

    We use a german Exchange2007SP1 with OWA and ISA.
    Username, Email, Password, German folder langueage, etc. are correct.

    I copied the ISA-Parameters “reason=0&formdir=1&curl=Z2Fowa” from the OWA-Url and replaced “reason” with “flags” as mentioned in the TouchDown-Documentation:
    “flags=0&formdir=1&curl=Z2Fowa”

    However, if I try to synchronize I get the following Error:
    “attr value delimeter missing!”
    (followed by some java debug code like “(position: START_TAG @2:11 in java.io. StringReader@433d68a0)”

    I tried to set Exchange type to 2003 (as mentioned in a comment above) but that didnt help.

    Any hints what may cause this error?

    I am using Touchdown, but the calling of numbers in Touchdown does not bring up the contact name, as such I would like to move selected contacts from Exchange to gmail, can you build in a feature for the import of a single contact? You can have a preview to ensure the fields line up? Thank you, I am a new customer and very much appreciate your product, its essential to use the MyTouch. Thank you.

    @David,
    if you long-press a contact in touchdown and select Add to Phone in the popup menu, the contact wil be added to the phone book.

    Could you please write to support more about what you meant by fields lining up ?

    Brian,
    Would you mind emailing support at Nitrodesk ? We may be able to help better offline.
    In general, you always want to try performing the Quick Configuration instructions provided at http://tinyurl.com/tdstart . the only gotcha is that in the UserID you have to provide DOMAIN\USERID whereas on the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices you enter the domain name separately.

    I have a licensed version of touch down on my android. It is very slow and have found few issues such as:
    - all contacts doesnt get copied to my phone from the touch down contacts
    - if i enable ‘copy contacts automatically’ in the touch down, i see a lot of duplicates in my phone on every refresh.. this is annoying!
    - it is very slow
    - touchdown needs to support attachments (word, excel, pdf, ppt etc.). it is not really compatible with other office applications. may be touchdown should come up with their own!

    other than these, i am happy with the functionalities.

  • http://www.nitrodesk.com NitroDesk

    Sanjeev,
    the latest version of touchdown has made some improvements in speed and functionality. If you are on the latest, i would still recommend you to perform a wipe Data and a reconfiguration in case you have upgraded from an earlier version.
    In this version, we have solved some of the issues with the contact syncing as well as restricted that from being pushed over to google online. This has been known to be one reason for duplicates. To make sure you dont get duplicates, it is recommended that you go to gmail, see the contact list and delete the touchdown contacts from there as well as the touchdown group.
    Once you do that, you can wipe the contacts storage on the phonebook and then perform a copy to phone.
    TouchDown has been found to be compatible with the other office applciations, many users use them together. The only known issue was that of opening office 2007 documents, which is being fixed (beta now allows this).

    If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email us at support..

    regards
