This Just In: Viber Launches Free VoIP App for Android

    Free text messaging and phone calls has now reached millions of additional users as Viber officially launches today its app version for Android.

    Viber was originally released for iPhone seven months ago, garnering an impressive 20 million registered users, 12 million of which are active users using the free VoIP feature for 11 million minutes every day, averaging 6 minutes per call. The beta version for Android has been tested by more than 50,000 users since May, in preparation for its official release. With Viber now available for both iPhone and Android, users will definitely enjoy its features with even more contacts.

    The Android version of Viber allows the same high-quality calls plus several exclusive features, including a full call screen for calls, pop-up notifications for text messaging, phone-integrated call and text logs, and default Viber dialers for all phone calls.

        My girlfriend is in Malaysia and I’m in America. Our calls on Viber only last 2minutes and 54 seconds before the call quality suddenly drops and crashes the app. Issue?

          Are you using it on 3G or WiFi?
          Please try making the call when both sides are using a high-speed WiFi connection.

          If it still doesn’t work, reinstall the app on both sides and test it again.

              LTE (4G) networks can be the problem for cuts in the call you are experiencing. They are fast indeed, but may still be unstable. See if you can find a good *local* WiFi connection also on your side, so we can make sure the problem is caused by the 4G network and not anything else.

              Regardless though, would a bad internet connection cause an app to crash at 2.45minutes exactly every tie? I highly doubt that.

              I agree that it’s strange. Even if it were Viber’s fault – why 2:45 EACH time? lol

              Since we haven’t tested Viber on 4G, it’s hard for us to give you a final answer. For now please try to reinstall on both sides and make a call on WiFi-WiFi.

        I am using android tablet OS 2.2 version and recently just downloaded the VIBER on it. I can manage to find my friends who are on VIBER but when i call her, there is a ringtone and she can pick up my call, However, we cannot hear each other and after 5 sec, the whole viber application is closed. And also, the viber account also deactivate by itself. what could be the problem?

            Viber does not officially support Tablets yet. This could be the cause of the problem.

            Just to make sure of that, make sure both sides are using a high-speed WiFi connection, and that it is not being blocked by a firewall. Testing this would involve also making a call using Viber on a ‘regular’ cellular device (iPhone/Android), thus isolating the problem.

            At any rate – we plan to develop support for Tablets soon, and we will announce it on our Facebook page.

      hi. i m using a Samsung Galaxy S II. Custom ROM – Lite ning installed. My Viber notices me saying “Viber service is currently unavailable or being blocked”.
      I want to state that on Wifi it works just fine. The problem persists only when I m trying to use 3G.
      On the other hand, a friend of mine, with same type of phone, same ROM and same mobile provider has no problem with Viber.
      I m form Romania.

        We assume you are a Vodafone user?

        Vodafone Romania decided to block Viber several months ago. This means Viber simply cannot function at all on Vodafone’s 3G.
        Unfortunately there is not much we (Viber) can do about it. You’ll have to contact Vodafone and demand answers, or get many Romanian users to sign a petition, etc.

            Some mobile operators across the world block Viber on their 3G network. Usually this happens when users have a “simple” data plan (or a prepaid contract), meaning they didn’t pay extra for using VoIP on their 3G network.

            In order to verify this, we recommend to:
            1. Test Viber on a few different WiFi networks, and see that it works fine.
            2. Contact your cell company and confirm this with them.

      hi viber i have an android in the uk and all is well when the viber services is conected it is fine but sometimes the service will not connect on 3g/h or wifi the notification just says “connecting to service…” any ideas as i have to keep checking to see if its connected or not.

        Not quite.

        When you use Viber, you can tell indirectly if your contact is online as follows:

        When you make a Viber call, you will first see “Calling”. It will change to “Ringing” if your contact is online and their phone is literally ringing.
        When you text, “Delivered” means the message has been received on the other side’s phone (he’s online). If you only see “Sent”, it means it’s been sent from you, but pending the other side to come online (they’re offline at the moment).

        In the future we might add an “Online” status message, but we still don’t know when this will happen.

      We are considering adding such option in the future, but for now you can’t.

      However, you do have an indirect way of seeing who’s online and who’s not.

      When you make a Viber call, if it says “Ringing..”, it means the other side’s phone is literally ringing, meaning they’re online. If it only says “Calling..”, it probably means they’re offline.

      Same for messaging – if you send a text and you see the “✔” sign, it means the message has been received at the other side’s phone (he’s online). If you only see the arrow sign, it means it’s been sent from you, but pending the other side to come online (they’re offline at the moment).

      Think of Viber as a “substitute” to your real phone. When you call/text someone, you’re not sure if they are currently available or not. Right? ;)

            Hi,

            Please try several different WiFi networks. The error message you are describing “…Viber cannot connect…” is usually caused when a network is blocking Viber’s ports.

      I installed Viber but cannot call my friend’s Viber. I installed several Apps : CamScanner, Sogou (Chinese input), and CamCard Lite, etc…Viber starts not working. I uninstall the Viber and re-install it. The Andriod phone reset right after I keyed in the 4 digits activation code. After the phone is on again, it said the Viber crash.
      Any suggestion, which App is the prime suspect?

        It is very hard for us to know, since any app could potentially collide with Viber :(
        Our best recommendation (since you suspect yourself that it is another app that’s causing the problem) is to isolate the problematic app and then see if Viber works once it’s not on your Android.

        Please make sure neither you nor the other side are connected to networks that might be blocking Viber (for example – a router running a firewall).

        1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connected to different WiFi networks. Does it work now?

        TCP: 5242 + 4244
        UDP: 5243 + 9785

        (if you are not sure how to enable ports, contact your router manufacturer)

      Hi I have a galaxy 2 and I am in the USA. I downloaded viber recently and was able to talk with my friends in Japan for about an hour and then the call dropped. Since then when I try to place viber calls I get the unavailable or blocked error message. I am still able to send and receive viber text messages though. I get the error messages both with wifi (different networks) and 4g. I an a Tmobile user, any idea why?

        The case you are describing is very strange. We can’t think of a reason why Viber would work just fine, and then suddenly show that it’s blocked on all of the different WiFi networks you tested and on 4G.

        Please make sure the network you are connected to is not blocking Viber (for example – a router running a firewall).

        We have recently come to suspect that Vodafone Cyprus started blocking Viber recently on their 3G network, and that is the reason for the prolem you’re experiencing. Please verify this issue with your cellular provider, and we would appreciate if you could report back to us their response.

        In order to understand if that is indeed the source of your problem, please test Viber on a few different WiFi networks (reinstall Viber when connected to WiFi).

        We doubt that this is related to the specific device you’re using – rather, it sounds like the network you’re trying to use Viber in is blocking the app.

        Please test Viber on a few different WiFi networks. Is the result the same on all of them?

        As far as we know Vodafone Romania has blocked Viber on their 3G network for users who don’t have a special VoIP plan. If he has such a plan with his cell provider, he should be able to use Viber just fine. If he doesn’t, then Viber will indeed be blocked for him on Vodafone’s 3G, but should work just fine when he switches to WiFi.

            Vodafone Ireland accidentally blocked Viber a few months back, but they fixed that issue in a matter of days after receiving angry user complaints. Have you tried contacting them? What are they saying about this issue?

            Also – are you sure your cellular data plan allows the usage of VoIP?

        We have received similar reports of the same issue from Vodafone users, actually in different countries!
        It might be that there is a block of some sort that was initiated a few days ago.

        Please specify:
        1. When exactly did this problem start, can you tell?
        2. Do you have other friends on Vodafone Egypt who are suddenly unable to use Viber on 3G, or is it just you?
        3. Have you tried contacting Vodafone Egypt? What are they saying about it?

            Unfortunately, if your carrier decides to block Viber on their 3G network, then there is not much we can do.
            You might want to purchase the special data plan that allows using VoIP (applications like Viber), but that is up to your own choice.

            Meanwhile, on WiFi, Viber should be working just fine.

      I’ve been trying to use Viber with no success on my sim-free Galaxy S2 with the latest stock ICS build.
      I don’t think it can possibly be an operator issue, since I’m trying to make it work on wifi and not on a cellular data network (and my iphone, which is also connected to the same exact network, works perfectly with viber).

      The message I get everytime as soon as I try to call someone is “Viber is currently unavaliable or being blocked. Please try again later. Place a regular call instead?”

      The S2 I am having this issue on btw is on a carrier named “Telio” in Norway, but again, that should be irrelevant since I am not trying to get it to work on my cellular data carrier, but on my wifi where my iphone (and all other apps on the S2) are perfectly working..

      What should I do to fix this?

        The problem you’re describing does not sound like a problem with Viber, but rather a problem with your phone’s internet or WiFi-sleep-policy settings.

        When your phone is on sleep mode, do other applications manage to pop up notifications?

        It sounds like your cellular provider might be blocking Viber’s traffic on their 3G network. Do you have friends on that same network who are experiencing the same issue? Also – have you tried contacting your cell provider about this?

        Please run the following tests in order for us to try and determine the sourceo f the problem:
        1. Please test it when connecting to a few different WiFi networks. Does the problem persist?
        2. Have you tried rebooting your device?
        3. Please note that Viber 2.2 (our new version) is about to be release hopefully within the next week or 2. When available, please try it out and see if it solves your problem.

      Viber works fine on mywife’s phone (Galaxy S2) but return error msg on my phone (Galaxy Ace 2) “Viber service unavailable or being blocked”. We are from Australia, our privder is TPG (=Optus) and we are having the same type of contract. I have looked through to compare the Viber Settings on both phones and they are the same.       I am using samsung galaxy Y duos, while making call it shows check your internet connection. However at same time i can access internet, can browsing and accessing my email accounts. Pls advice, while using with wifi connection it working fine.

        What country are you located in? Which cellular network?

        It could be that the network you are connected to is blocking Viber’s traffic.

        1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connecting to a few different WiFi networks (in order to pinpoint the source of the problem). What are the results?
        2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled (“forwarded”) on your routers or firewalls:
        TCP: 5242 + 4244
        UDP: 5243 + 9785

        (if you are not sure how to enable ports, you may contact your router manufacturer)

        The authorities in the UAE have decided to block Viber in the whole country, and that is why you are experiencing this issue. Unfortunately there is not much we can do to help :(
        You may try contacting the authorities and ask for the reason for this block.

      I have a Samsung galaxy SII and Samsung tab 10.1.
      They use a router to connect to internet. when i use Viber , my SII saying “Viber service is currently unavailable or being blocked” but my tablet connect perfectly.

            It might be that the block is gradual, and it does not affect all phones or networks at the same time.

            Can you spot any difference between the phones? Are they connected to different networks? or cellular companies?

      im using htc sensation and im from iran
      since a week ago after my viber call has been dropped, i couldn’t use viber properly and most of the time : “service is currently…..” appears. i checked that with my friend’s android phone and i made a viber call through my wi-fi but his viber working fine.
      i reinstalled and reactivated viber but no change.

        We have heard that a few users are still able to use Viber, and we are not sure why. It might be that the block is gradually affecting all users.

        Can you think of any difference between yours and your friend’s network that might be the cause for this difference?

      I am using samsung galaxy wonder, I installed viber and recieved the activation code (after hard effort), when I open viber I have the message “Syncing not completed” and I have the option “sync contacts”, when I touch “sync contact”, I have the message “viber service in currently unavailable or being blocked, please try again later”. I am from France, my cellular network is “FREE”. Please help me solving this problem…

        Some mobile operators across the world block Viber on their 3G network. Usually this happens when users have a “simple” data plan (or a prepaid contract), meaning they didn’t pay extra for using VoIP on their 3G network.

        In order to verify this, we recommend to:
        1. Test Viber on a few different WiFi networks, and see that it works fine.
        2. Contact your cell company and confirm this with them.

          1.concerning the first point, I already tried the wifi network at home and the wifi network at the company where I work….both did not work.

          2.concerning the second point, I was using viber on my old mobile “NOKIA C07″ and it was working fine, but since I changed my mobile to samsung galaxy wonder I had this problem of contact synchronization, knowing that I still have the same operator as before “FREE”, that worked very well with NOKIA.

          Please help me so that I can enjoy viber

      Great app! Unfortunately, it keeps crashing on my Sony Ericsson Xperia X8.
      Either I reboot the phone and then solve it for only a short brief time, or

      I have to reinstall it all over again. It’s rather annoying. I realize my phone is not
      the newest out there, nor the strongest. But It doesn’t seem like that resource-heavy app. How can solve this ever-crashing status of Viber?

            The TCP and UDP ports we mentioned are the specific ones needed to be forwarded, for both ingoing and outgoing.

            As we said, we recommend contacting your ISP or your router manufacturer for more information (since the instructions for opening/checking a port are very different for each router).

        Hi,

        Please try the following:
        -Make sure that you have a strong Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G connection. Viber will only sync when there is an adequate internet connection
        -Make sure the contacts you expect to see in your Viber contact list are Viber users. If they are not Viber users, they will not appear in the Viber contact list.
        -Refresh the Viber contact list by pulling the screen down and releasing
        -Check your device settings for which contacts to display. Select “All contacts” in order for Viber to recognize all of your contacts (on iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Import SIM contacts)
        -From your device contact list, remove a contact you know for sure is a Viber user > Add them back to your device contact list > Check your Viber contact list to see if the sync has occurred
        -Restart your device

        If none of the above solves the issue, uninstall* Viber and re-install
