Tethering your laptop with your G1 just got easier

image_66OK, so tethering your laptop and G1 device isn’t entirely new, but in the past the processes have required root access, or have just been plain messy. However, help is at hand in the form of PDAnet 3G tethering application by June Fabrics (who partners with Palm). This program allows users to use their mobile internet on their G1 as a modem for their laptop.

First and foremost, this little application does not require root access to work. Second, it is free. Currently in BETA stages, the application seems to still run flawlessly according to numerous reports around the internet. In the future, the final version will likely become a ‘paid application’, but if it works well, we think it will prove rather successful.

Of course there is a downside. Using your G1 as a modem for your laptop is probably in direct conflict with your terms and conditions and excessive usage will easily get you a warning and potentially chucked off the mobile interweb. You have been warned.

T-Mobile better not hollar!!! I have been using my Treo 750 as a modem on the service and when I bought my wife a G1 the salesgirl, “Oh sure, you can use the G1 as a Modem!!”

I am about to tether my toshiba laptop with my G1.
But before I do I need to know if anyone has gotten in trouble in anyway with T-mobile?
I don’t want any part of retribution, yet if I go for the dongle…$60+tax….come on give us a break already!
    Thanks for any reply.

Richard, STAY UNDER 10GB of data PER MONTH. You will get slapped on the wrist HARD by T-Mobile if you do more than 10GB. They throttle down your bandwidth for the remander of the month, for between 2 and 4 weeks at sub-edge speed. That is the ONLY punishment. Their 3g Network can’t handle heavy hitting just yet, so that’s their way of dealing with it until they’ve established their networks. You’ll know when that happens because you’ll see a bunch of 3g dongles on the shelf, promoting 3g use. :)
