Admit it, who doesn’t want free data connectivity on their smartphones? The ability to surf and open different websites without any charge is a huge deal for everyone. How to Connect Your Desktop to the Internet Using an Android Phone

Perhaps you don’t know it yet, especially if you’re new to Android: you can use your Android phone to hook up your desktop or laptop to the Web.  In this scenario, your Android phone essentially becomes a modem/router of some sort, which you can use to bring Internet connectivity to your desktop or laptop. This can only work if you are subscribed to a data plan with your mobile carrier.  If you are subscribed only to a call-only plan, this solution might not work.  Also, before attempting to hook up your desktop to the Internet in the method described here, …

Sprint Starts blocking Tethering Apps in the Market

Sprint Starts blocking Tethering Apps in the Market

In another move that’s sure to irritate at least a few folks, Sprint has effectively blocked the downloading of any tethering apps from the Android Market, in what seems to be a move to keep people from abusing their unlimited data plans. This follows in the footsteps of the other major US Carriers, who have also blocked tethering apps in the Android Market. The apps are still working, in case you think that your WiFi tether app that you downloaded last month will no longer work, as it will. But these tethering apps are still available to download via sideloading. …

Android 2.2 FroYo to support USB tethering and Wi-Fi sharing

Android 2.2 FroYo to support USB tethering and Wi-Fi sharing

Tech Crunch has turned up some screen shots from the upcoming Android 2.2 OS (code named Froyo) that show built-in support for USB tethering and the use of the Android device as a Wi-Fi hotspot for the sharing of its data connectivity. I think it is quite likely that we will see some carriers disabling this functionality in shipping phones, but surely some will allow it. Google’s I/O event is only days away, so we’re very likely going to see the the official Android 2.2 unveiling at that time, and maybe even on a new device.

Google to allow tethering apps for non T-Mobile users

Google to allow tethering apps for non T-Mobile users

Earlier in the week we reported that Google had cut tethering applications from the application store. Tethering applications allow users to hook their G1 up to another device such as a laptop, and use the data connection provided by the G1 as a modem for the laptop, thus providing it with the Internet. This has a few implications, not least of which is due to the fact that T-Mobile also provide wireless Internet based on a monthly subscription for laptops in markets such as the UK and USA. Allowing G1 owners to use their G1′s ‘unlimited web browsing’ for their …

Google removing tethering apps from Android Market

Google removing tethering apps from Android Market

While not entirely unexpected, it appears that Google has started removing tethering applications from the Android Market.  For those of you unfamiliar with the term tethering, it refers to using a cell phone as a modem for a personal computer or similar device.  It gets its name from the cable that often links the two, which acts as a tether of sorts (though Bluetooth can also be used in lieu of a cable). My friend Chris Davies of Android Community has written up a nice explanation of what appears to be going on at the Android Market, so I recommend …

OK, so tethering your laptop and G1 device isn’t entirely new, but in the past the processes have required root access, or have just been plain messy. This program allows users to use their mobile internet on their G1 as a modem for their laptop. First and foremost, this little application does not require root access to work. Second, it is free. Currently in BETA stages, the application seems to still run flawlessly according to numerous reports around the internet. …

How to tether your G1 for use as a laptop modem – kinda

How to tether your G1 for use as a laptop modem – kinda

Gizmodo has just published an article that explains how to connect your G1 to a computer for data tethering.  The process requires a USB cable, the Tetherbot App,  the Android SDK, a little use of either Run (on Windows) or Terminal (on Mac), and it can only be used with Firefox. Carriers haven’t been too supportive of tethering, and you may want to either check with your own carrier for charges, or use this sparingly. You can take a look at the step-by-step process here.
