Nvidia saw its profit double in Q2 2012, thanks to the high demand for Tegra 3 chips. The growth in sales for Nvidia’s mobile chips are compensating for Nvidia’s slow decay into irrelevance in the PC market, as manufacturers are replacing most Nvidia’s GPU’s in laptops with Intel’s integrated graphics chips. However, Nvidia might still be the one to have the one to emerge as winner against Intel with the fast growth of the mobile industry.

After the announcement of the Nexus 7, which is an almost-no-compromise tablet that sells for only $200, a lot of people have been wondering why we can’t buy powerful smartphones that are just as affordable as the Nexus 7. The answer is not an easy one, as a smartphone contains more components than the Nexus 7, some of them being quite expensive, like the 3G and 4G modems, the higher PPI displays, much better cameras, and so on. Earlier this week, Nvidia has disclosed that their Icera 410 LTE modem has been approved for AT&T’s network. This is a big step forward for Nvidia’s Tegra chips, which so far have lacked any sort of integration with LTE chips. It’s too bad that it took Nvidia so long, because Qualcomm took advantage of their edge in this area, and sold more S4 chips with integrated LTE than they can supply by the end of the year.
