Asustek to build an Android-powered Robot, the EeeBot

Taiwanese computer manufacturer, Asustek, has unveiled plans to build an Android-powered educational robot called the EeeBot. The goal of the government-sponsored project is to promote the Android OS by building a low-cost robot that will interact with children. Asustek will build the hardware and the software for the robot and will subsidize a portion of the cost to keep it affordable for families. Revenue to offset the subsidy will be generated through the sale of content and services for the robot. Netronix to develop an Android-based e-book reader

According to Digitimes, Taiwanese network hardware manufacturer Netronix is partnering with Texas Instruments to move their line of e-book readers to an Android-based OS in 2010. Company chairman Arthur Lu said that Netronix will adopt the Android platform in order to increase the interoperability of their e-books with other Android devices. Presumably, owners of a Netronix e-book reader will be able to sync and share digital content between their Android reader and their Android handset, in a manner similar to the syncing that currently exists between the Kindle and the iPhone. CEO confirms that Acer is working on Android smartphones for 2009

We reported last week that Acer’s head of mobile phones, Aymar de Lencquesaing, said that his company was working on Android based smartphones. This week we have the IDG News Service reporting that Acer’s CEO, Gianfranco Lanci, has confirmed this at Acer’s Q1 investor’s conference in Taiwan today. “We are working on an Android solution for the smartphone. I think it’s too early to say if we’re going to see Android on a netbook in the near future.” According to the IDG story, Acer plans to have the first smartphone running Android available this year. Tatung to build Android phone – possibly with WiMAX

This little nugget from DigiTimes doesn’t seem to be based on pure rumor and speculation – for once. DigiTimes is quoting Tatung’s chairman, Weishan Lin, as saying that his company is developing an Android powered handset. Of course what DigiTimes piece would be complate without a large does of unattributed random speculation? Fear not, because it is also reporting that Tatung InfoComm is the likely receiving of Tatung’s Android device. Tatung InfoComm is one of Taiwan’s WiMAX license recipients.
Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom to offer HTC Sapphire next quarter?

DigiTimes is quoting “market sources” that tell it that it is likely that Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom will offer HTC’s second Android based phone to its customers in the second quarter of this year. For most of us, that device seems likely to be the HTC Sapphire that we’ve spotted on the net a few times. We expect to see the device officially announced in the middle of this month at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, Spain.
