The potential of the Chromebook franchise

The Chromebook has been discussed quite a bit lately. With leaked videos, Android mentioned in the code, and a website domain reserved it looks like we’ll see something amazing at Google I/O this Spring. Even with all that speculation, is Chromebook ever going to be viable? Are you ever going to consider a Chromebook like you consider your current computer, a standalone platform?

Google to offer 100 GB of free cloud storage to new Chromebook and Chromebox buyers?

Google’s first-generation Chromebooks haven’t quite made it to the mainstream yet, but the search giant has decided not only to follow up on those devices, but also to step up its game a bit.

The makers of the web-centric Chrome OS have upped the ante in terms of tech specs, equipping the new Chromebook with a far snappier processor than the first-generation one, but also with more RAM. Aside from the new Series 5 Chromebook 550, Google has also released a brand new Series 3 Chromebox, similar with Apple’s Mac Minis, but available at a lower price point.

New Chromebook and Chromebox are now available in BestBuy and Dixons stores in the US and UK

Despite the fact that first-generation Chromebooks have proven to be, let’s be honest, an utter and complete failure, Google seems to be still trusting the project and has unveiled and launched a second-generation device, alongside Samsung, a month back.

The new Series 5 550 Chromebook was joined by a Series 3 Chromebox and, although some complained about the gadgets’ pricing, they looked pretty good on paper, coming with some serious power under their hoods. But while lack of power was a major cause of the original Chromebooks’ failure, another contributing factor was Google’s poor marketing of the devices and the limited availability, both online and in retail stores [...]
