LG renames the “Quick Voice” assistant to “Q Voice”

by: LucianJuly 24, 2012

After Samsung launched the Galaxy S3 with S-Voice at the end of May this year, LG came out and announced their “Quick Voice” assistant (a month later) which does many of the same things: maps search, web search, weather, and integrates with apps like Email, Alarm, Calendar and more.

Given LG’s track record of following in Samsung’s footsteps for everything Samsung does, and that they should’ve needed at least a few months to get the Quick Voice app ready, it’s probable they knew about Samsung’s S-Voice way ahead of anyone else.

I wonder [...]

Face-off: S Voice vs Google Voice Search (Video)

by: Bams SadewoJuly 6, 2012

A little bit of sibling rivalry is never a bad thing if it fosters innovation and improvement.

What we have here is a video posted by Android Authority’s Clayton Ljungberg , who put to the test two high-profile voice assistants — Samsung’s S Voice on the Galaxy S3 and Google Voice Search on the Galaxy Nexus (running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean). Let’s see how the two performed when subjected to your typical daily grind.

Summoning the applications on the two phones can be done easily, thanks to the adequate shortcuts provided to start speaking and demand results. So both passed with flying [...]

LG Quick Voice virtual assistant official, to take on S Voice and Siri

by: Chris SmithJune 20, 2012

More and more companies are looking to bring voice recognition support to their devices, especially smartphone and tablet makers, complete with advanced virtual assistant features. Samsung has S Voice, a feature available only on the Galaxy S3 at this time and seen as the company’s response to Apple’s Siri assistant and today LG announced its own similar “intelligent voice recognition” software called Quick Voice.

LG’s virtual assistant is apparently scheduled to hit various Android smartphones part of the Optimus family, such as the Optimus Vu and Optimus LTE II, which are getting Quick Voice in June and July, respectively.

As [...]

Galaxy S3 add-on pack for the Galaxy Nexus [video]

by: ClaytonJune 14, 2012

With all the hype about the Galaxy S3 these days, does it still pay to own the Google phone? Of course it does! Galaxy Nexus owners receive all OTA updates, have gratuitous amounts of developer support, and still own one of the more powerful Android devices to date.

Regardless of these facts, many owners are itching to taste some of that GS3 goodness, and we don’t blame them. The device and its software are simply epic. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the Galaxy Nexus’ developer community to provide loyal owners with a way to do it!

What is needed?

Now before I delve any deeper into this Galaxy Nexus transformation, it is important to say that [...]

Unsigned S Voice app works once more on non-Samsung devices

by: Bams SadewoMay 28, 2012

Even though the official launch of Samsung Galaxy S3 is but a day away, those in the know have gotten to know the phone’s software quite well thanks to a certain leaked ROM, which has seen many — if not all — of its features becoming available to use on other phones. Ever since the devs at XDA shared the APK file for S Voice, we’ve seen Samsung trying to block the use of the app on non-Samsung Galaxy S3 devices, only for the devs to outsmart the Korean company.

The first attempt to restrict the unauthorized use of S Voice was easily thwarted by having the app signed. Now reports suggest that even the unsigned APK file of S Voice [...]

XDA brings back the S Voice, working again on non-Galaxy S3 devices

by: Kelvin ServigonMay 23, 2012

On Monday, we reported that a leaked Samsung Galaxy S3 ROM became available for download for all, packed with all the goodness of the smartphone’s great features. Not surprisingly, the full Galaxy S3 ROM came from XDA, everybody’s go-to site for all things amazing.

As soon as the S3 ROM became available online, one of its key features, the S Voice app, became available for download as well, for all Android users who want to try out the proprietary Samsung voice command app. But most of the users who tried out the app said that it failed to work. It became apparent that Samsung’s servers were set to deny requests from the S Voice app running on [...]

Samsung moves to block unofficial use of S Voice, wants to keep it fresh for the Galaxy S3 [Updated]

by: Bams SadewoMay 21, 2012

Updated with workaround for Samsung’s restriction. See below. Thanks, Frank!

While not everyone is enamored with the design of the Samsung Galaxy S3, apparently people don’t mind getting an early taste of the phone’s smart software. It started with Flipboard, a supposedly exclusive social magazine app for the Galaxy S3, which was extracted from the device merely days after its introduction. Then came the wide availability of the Galaxy S3’s ROM, which gave way for even more goodies to come. One of said goodies is Samsung’s answer to Siri, the Samsung S Voice.

The APK for Samsung S Voice was highly sought after, and it did make its way to other Android [...]

Meet Sensory TrulyHandsfree, what’s behind Samsung’s new S Voice

by: Bogdan PetrovanMay 12, 2012

Speech recognition is a staple in today’s smartphones, no matter if your device runs Android, iOS, or Windows Phone. No matter which one you prefer, you can find a range of voice-activation utilities from useful to downright amazing. But have you ever thought about how Samsung’s new S Voice or Apple’s Siri work?

The quick (and accurate) answer is “It’s complicated”. The amount of research and work that goes into creating an effective speech recognition application is mind boggling. Speech recognition specialists need to take into account numerous factors and feed them as inputs into complex algorithms. Just think about how important it is to [...]

How smart is the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone?

by: Mike AndriciMay 6, 2012

The Samsung Galaxy S3, revealed a couple of days ago, definitely sports some of the best hardware specs around, but it also looks like Samsung have managed to integrate software functions that give a new meaning for the word “smart” in smartphones. Marketed by Samusng as human-centric functions, these are features exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S3. On a personal level, I feel like the smart features on the Samsung Galaxy S3 represent a major improvement towards simplifying tasks on your smartphone. Granted, we expect more from a thinking smartphone, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

So let’s take a quick look at the software functions that make the [...]
