Amazon Android Tablet To Have Video Streaming?

Recently, everyone’s been talking about Amazon’s planned line of Android tablets. Being one of the world’s biggest companies, and arguably one of the best-positioned to introduced a new product to a market, there are a lot of rumors flying around about what exactly these tablets will bring to the table. After all, the tablet market is currently one of the most crowded places for a product to be nowadays. However, Amazon’s already available offering, the Kindle, may offer a hint.

What Amazon did with the Kindle was provide a ready-made source for digital items that you can use on it, namely e-books. With the recent opening of the Amazon Appstore – an app store dedicated to the Android platform – the company seems to be aiming for a similar strategy. But rumors are pointing to another addition: free access to Amazon MP3 and Amazon Instant Video services.

Although no official word has been said about the Amazon tablet line, sources are mentioning that one of the initial tablet offerings is code-named “Hollywood”. Supposedly packing a 10-inch color display and set for a holiday launch this year, it will also provide access the company’s movie streaming service for free at launch. As for the Amazon MP3 digital music store, it already sells to a number of Android smartphones and tablets and it’ll be easy to integrate it.

This could be a good thing for Amazon. Right now, their only competition in the video-streaming game is Netflix, which offers subscribers TV and movie streams for $7.99 a month – and that’s for phones. If Amazon does it for Android tablet – which are better set-up for video viewing – then they’ve got a winner on their hands.

HTC shelves its Android and Chrome OS tablets

Remember the Android tablet from HTC that was supposedly going to debut at CES? The tablet and its super-secret unveiling never materialized and now we may know why. According to Anthony Petts, Australian Sales and Marketing Director for HTC, both the Android and Chrome-based tablets are being shelved so the company can focus on a new crop of smartphones. Disappointing news for the tablet fans in our midst but not surprising. With the Apple tablet rumors reaching a crescendo, many potential tablet manufacturers may be taking a step back to see what Cupertino has to offer first.

Android WordPress app in the works?

Bloggers rejoice! There may be an official WordPress app in the works for Android devices. The Blog Herald has discovered that WordPress has created a blog subdomain at android.wordpress.org. If this is any indication of foreshadowing then let it be known that they did the same thing when creating apps for the iPhone and BlackBerry. Speculation has it that the app will launch around the Nexus One hoopla around January 5th so be on the lookout. Right now this is only a strong rumor but as soon as we have more information or details we will let you know.

Motorola to introduce two new Android handsets with OLED displays at CES 2010?

CES 2010 is coming fast and the rumors about what will be announced next week at the industry’s largest trade show are starting to flow. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry jumped on the Android rumor bandwagon by predicting that Motorola will debut two new Android handsets with OLED displays during its pre-CES press conference on January 6th. One handset will be a Google experience phone (i.e., no MOTOBLUR) with a QWERTY keyboard and is headed to AT&T, while the other will debut with Verizon Wireless and will feature a soft keyboard. It will be interesting to see how this plays out next week as this prediction flies in the face of current rumors which place the Motorola Backflip en route to AT&T and the Motorola Devour A555 headed to Verizon Wireless. Neither phone matches Chowdhry’s predictions as the Backflip supposedly runs MOTOBLUR and has not been mentioned to have an OLED screen and the Verizon Wireless Devour is rumored to be a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard and is an entry-level device that does not include an OLED display. Fingers crossed that all the rumors are correct and Motorola will be launching not two, but four new handsets next week.

HTC Incredible headed to Verizon Wireless?

Engadget dropped a short but sweet rumor that would interest Verizon Wireless customers. According to a trusted source, the HTC Incredible is real and is headed for Verizon Wireless. As a reminder, the HTC Incredible was one of the names uncovered in the leaked HTC Android 2.1 ROM from a few weeks ago. No other details were revealed so we are left wondering if this rumor is indeed true and left imagining what might constitute a phone worthy of the name “Incredible”. Any guesses?

Google phone headed to T-Mobile in January 2010?

T-Mobile was the first US carrier to jump on the Android bandwagon, releasing the G1 when the Android platform was in its infancy. It only seems appropriate that the carrier is the first to be rumored to be getting the mysterious “Google phone“. According to a completely unsubstantiated rumor from a trusted source at TmoNews, the Google phone is supposedly codenamed Passion and will launch sometime during the first two weeks of January 2010. With only a few weeks left before we ring in the New Year, we should know the truth about this esoteric handset soon enough. Until then, speculation on the veracity of this rumor is welcome in the comments.

[Editor's note: The guys at TmoNews indicated that they've been told that a "Google Experience" phone is headed to T-Mobile. "Google Experience" is the term used by Google to refer to any "with Google" branded phone, like the G1 or myTouch 3G. This rumor seems even more weak than most, so take it with a fist full salt. -Michael]

Rumors out of Gizmodo suggest that the Google phone is a real, honest to goodness phone. According to a trusted but anonymous source, a Google-branded handset running a not-yet-seen build of Android is in the early prototype stage. These early prototypes, which feature large LCD displays, are expected to be disseminated over the next few weeks to employees at Google’s Mountain View campus. To add mystery and intrigue to the rumor, the source claims that the version of Android that we are rocking on our phones is not the “real” Android. If what we have currently is not the “real” Android, wonder what is?

HTC now predicting over 1 million in T-Mobile G1 sales for 2008?

It appears that today is a DigiTimes kinda day. The Taiwan based site is now quoting the Chinese language Economic Daily News website as providing some new information from Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO.

According to EDN, via DigiTimes, Chou says that it will have sold more than 1 million T-Mobile G1 Android based smartphones by the end of this year, which is right around the corner.

DigiTimes provided this text as being a translated quote from EDN:

While there are slightly conflicting rumors circulating that either T-Mobile is going to launch an Android-based G2 handset in January and HTC is planning the worldwide launch of a second Android handset in April, EDN said that HTC is actually developing its third Android-based handset now.

Of course, if EDN had really printed that, it never would have written the “EDN said….” part that I bolded, above. So, once again, we really can’t rely on this “news” for much of anything other than fuel for the fire.

So there is probably little to gain from this story. Of course we know that there is a second Android device coming from HTC. In 2009, even. And considering that it takes roughly 18 to 24 months to build a handset, it comes as no surprise that HTC would be working on the 3rd model already. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had the 4th in the works currently.

If anybody can provide me a link or something from the Economic Daily News site, post it in the comments because I’d love to see it for myself. I’d like to get my own translation done to see what is really going on.
