by: nathanAugust 29, 2012
It looks as if at least 8 devices have been put on the banned list courtesy of Apple. On Dec 6th, the ongoing saga between Samsung and Apple should come to a close. This gives time for Samsung to catch their breath ad draw up a new game plan. In doing that, it also delays the effects of Apple's stupendous legal victory.

While Samsung is determined to continue to fight Apple in court despite this “worst scenario” for the South Korean Android device maker, there are side effects that are already felt.

A few days ago we reported that after the verdict was made public, Samsung’s market cap dropped $12 billion. Now we hear that the second-hand smartphone market also has to suffer following the Apple win.

by: Chris SmithAugust 28, 2012

In addition to fighting, and beating Samsung in various courts, with the most important victory scored in the U.S. last week, Apple is also involved in other patent-based lawsuits involving other major Android players including HTC and Google (Motorola).

The Apple vs Motorola conflict is all the more important now that Google completed its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola, as Apple and Google are formally facing each other in various courts in the USA but also other regions such as Germany.

And it’s in Germany that Motorola obtained a few injunctions against Apple, all stayed pending appeals. FOSS Patents explains how injunction [...]

Samsung releases internal memo in reaction to “worst scenario” verdict in U.S. trial

by: Chris SmithAugust 27, 2012

Samsung has been dealt a major defeat in the U.S., where the jury in the Apple vs Samsung case found the South Korean company to infringe on several software and design patents and awarded Apple just a little over $1 billion in damages.

According to a report from The Korea Times, the verdict was unexpected by Samsung officials, who saw it as “absolutely the worst scenario” for the company:

Samsung executives were still reeling in shock Sunday, but provided no clear hint on the company’s next move in the showdown with its industry archrival. It’s widely expected that Samsung will appeal, but the outlook for success in the [...]

by: Chris SmithAugust 27, 2012

Late on Friday the jury in the U.S. Apple vs Samsung trial revealed its findings in the case, and awarded a huge win to Apple, with the iPhone maker winning on almost on counts. Consequently, the jury said Samsung owes Apple just over $1 billion in damages.

We’ve already seen reactions from both Apple and Samsung, but also from Google, and we’ve seen the immediate effects the verdict had on both companies’ traded stock. We’re probably going to see both companies file various motions and try to overturn certain areas of the verdict in the day to come – yes, even Apple will file such motions as the jury found that the Galaxy Tab tablets don’t [...]

7.5% share slump wipes $12 billion off Samsung’s market value

by: Gary SimsAugust 27, 2012

The markets have reacted swiftly to the landmark judgement granted to Apple against Samsung. In heavy trading (around four times the daily average) Samsung’s shares plummeted by 7.5 percent taking more than $12 billion off the electronic giant’s market value. The market is clearly worried that the $1.05 billion in damages ordered by the Californian jury and the prospect of a complete ban of Samsung’s key mobile products will do irreparable damage to the company.

“There are still too many variables including the final ruling to come at least a month from the recent verdict, and whether there will be a sales ban on [...]

by: Simon HillAugust 27, 2012
So what does Google think of Samsung's court loss against Apple? According to its statement the patent war will go on, the validity of Apple's patents will be challenged, and Android will prevail (reading between the lines a bit on that last one).
