With technology enthusiasts in the United States still not knowing when (and for what price) to expect the Galaxy S3, Sammy’s new flagship phone, things are starting to shape up in Europe. UK’s most important carriers have officially announced when they’ll put the phone up for sale and how much it will cost. The good news is that you’ll be able to get the Galaxy S3 free of charge. The bad news is that not all carriers offer the next Galaxy for free, and those that do require some hefty new plans to be activated. Vodafone will be the first …
Announced back in January at CES 2012 Las Vegas, the Medfield chip represents Intel’s latest attempt to enter the smartphone processor market, one currently dominated by Qualcomm and Nvidia (both using ARM architectures for their designs). Although Intel has high hopes that, starting with the second quarter of this year, major manufacturers will choose to implement the Medfield chip in their upcoming flagship superphones, a recent report from Digitimes claims that the Intel Atom Z2460 CPU will be more popular in the entry-level market instead, one significantly less profitable than the high-end sector. We’ve previously reported about the Medfield chip …
Accounting for an impressive 81% of all CPU’s delivered in 2011, Intel is currently dominating the global CPU market. However, while the desktop, netbook and notebook markets are all well under Intel’s firm grasp, the Santa-Clara based company is still struggling (and has been for the past few years) to enter the mobile CPU market, a market currently dominated by ARM’s Cortex A9 chips. While Intel has the technology to create substantially more processing power, previous smartphone CPU attempts were severely lacking in the power management sector, exactly the area where ARM’s chips shine. Announced back at CES 2012 in …
Hero users on Orange UK’s network will start receiving the Android 2.1 Eclair update as early as next week, according to an HTC spokesperson. The following statement has been posted on Orange’s website: “We apologise for the delay in Orange Hero customers receiving their Eclair update. Testing the update across European markets took longer than anticipated. However, we hope to receive final approval by the end of the week and Orange handsets should start updating from next week.”

The mobile phone carrier Orange are set to release their very own Android based device for the grand sum of €1.00. Built by Foxconn on behalf of the Orange network, the device is currently set for a European only release. Naturally, in order to qualify for this low price you will have to be on a particular contract, but this doesn’t detract from the fact that it is still very, very affordable. Your €1.00 will get you a 3.2″ screen providing a 480px x 320px resolution. You even get Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. The ‘Boston’ will be …
HTC’s just mentioned a new firmware update for the Hero on Orange a few minutes ago, so I thought I’d point it out to all of our EU readers. You can get the HTC Hero firmware update here.
Digitimes, the semi-reliable newspaper based in Taiwan, is reporting that Orange has contracted with Foxconn International Holdings to build a new Android handset. The supposedly carrier-designed handset is expected to incorporate a 3G chipset from Qualcomm and will ship in the second quarter of 2010. If this rumor pans out, Orange’s new Android offering will join the Motorola Dext and the HTC Tattoo in the Orange lineup.
Today Motorola made good on its promise that we’d see the new CLIQ offered by Orange UK as the DEXT. The official press release came out of Orange today, and the device is set to be available in mid-October, the same time frame we’ve been hearing for T-Mobile USA’s version. We’ve pasted in a demo video produced by Orange for your enjoyment. It’s available after the jump.
We already know that the DEXT will be launched on Orange UK in Q4 of this year. What we didn’t know is when. The DEXT/CLIQ is the new Android based device from Motorola and sports two different names depending on whether you are stateside or not. Those living outside of America will become increasingly familiar with the DEXT, while those living in will recognize the CLIQ. Orange UK have confirmed that the DEXT will become available in early October, with preorders going live on September 22nd. We are still holding our breath for pricing. Now, according to BGR, the CLIQ …
T-Mobile UK has yet to confirm the availability date of its G2 Touch (HTC Hero) smartphone, noting that it’s not been delayed since the date was never set. However, the launch announcement that originally went out did specify “mid-July”, so that certainly would mean sooner rather than later. T-Mobile Germany, for its part, has said that the phone will be available in early August (“ab Anfang August”). Orange UK still lists the device as “coming soon.”
Today Orange UK announced that it will be adding the HTC Hero to its handset portfolio. The phone will be available free to customers who sign up for a 24 month £39.15/mo contract, which includes 1200 network minutes, unlimited text, and internet browsing. It will be available in “early July”, though we’ve been told by other, non-Orange retail sources that the device will officially be available from distributers on July 3rd (though not necessarily through Orange). Below is a video demo of the device that Orange posted.
The news on the wire suggests that Orange may be the first in the UK to receive the ‘HTC Hero’. Although the device has been seen around town already and the new UI for the device has already been snapped, there has been no word on the official specifications of the device. If the reports are accurate, it won’t be hitting any home runs, but may offer HSDPA connectivity, a 3MP camera and Bluetooth; all completely expected, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary. The device is said to be hitting the USA in August, but currently we have no …
Citing its favorite source, the Chinese language “Commercial Times”, DigiTimes is reporting that Sony Ericsson is thought to be offering its first Android device with European carrier Orange by the end of the year. This oh-so-rumorous piece of information comes from “market sources” quoted by Commerical Times that claim to have seen internal Orange documents indicating a holiday season 2009 launch for the Sony Ericsson Android smartphone. DigiTimes is known for putting out some of the lowest quality rumors in tech, though, so this is by no means fact. Especially considering that Sony Ericsson’s CEO indicated that the company’s first …
Sometimes we struggle to make posts which we feel are stretching things somewhat. This one is such a case. According to a French website called Mobinaute, Orange France is set to release a slew of Android handsets this year; six to be precise. It is very important to note that the source of this information is in question and we have no way of assuring its validity. This makes us rather skeptical about the exact figures. The source even goes on to say that the six Android handsets will be from no less than five different brands of manufacturer, including …
