Amazon wants to sell the Nexus 7 in its online store

by: LucianJuly 12, 2012

Well, this is a strange twist of events! The Nexus 7 has been called by many reviewers already the “Kindle Fire killer”, because there’s no reason why anyone would want the Kindle Fire over a much higher quality and much higher performance Nexus 7. That’s even more true if you’re an Android user, who is best served by having the latest software straight from Google, instead of a heavily customized older version of Android. And yet, an Amazon spokesperson told TechRadar: “People higher up in Amazon are talking to Google regarding the Nexus 7.”

This move may seem even stranger considering that Amazon is about to launch the [...]

Nexus 7 delayed at Office Depot until further notice

by: Chris SmithJuly 12, 2012

Yesterday we heard that the Google Nexus 7 tablet may be available from Office Depot starting today, but it turns out that’s not the case anymore. In fact, we have a new screenshot that reveals that the first Jelly Bean tablet in the world has been delayed. The device is still available for pre-order from the retailer, but we don’t have any official release date for you at this time.

Apparently Office Depot has received Nexus 7 stock, but they came with strict instructions not to be displayed and not to be sold at this time. Any Nexus 7 shipments have to be held and locked up “until further notice.” I would assume Google is not yet ready to [...]

IHS iSuppli says Nexus 7 costs $152 to build

by: LucianJuly 12, 2012

A few days ago we had an initial prediction of how much it costs to build the Nexus 7 from iFixit, which said that the components alone should cost around $184. IHS iSuppli did an actual Nexus 7 teardown and evaluated the cost of the components to be around $152, for the 8 GB Nexus 7, and only $7.5 more for the 16 GB version.

Andrew Rassweiler, who leads the teardown team at IHS iSuppli thinks Google will indeed break even on the 8 GB $199 version, just like Google said they would, but they will get a nice profit on the 16 GB $249 version. This was pretty obvious from day one, because 8GB of storage doesn’t cost [...]

Sony Tablet S successor may be arriving soon

by: LucianJuly 11, 2012

The Sony Tablet S has been one of the tablets with a unique and interesting design in the market. While a lot of people were trying to replicate the slab form factor for their tablets, Sony tried to think about how to make a 9″ tablet that is easy to hold with one hand. Going by the initial reviews, they seem to have succeeded more or less, with reviewers declaring that it feels lighter than it is really is when holding it. Many claim it feels more like a 7″ tablet.

The 10″ tablets are usually hard to hold with one hand, because of the (still) fairly bulky weight (600+ grams, ideal weight for [...]

Office Depot Nexus 7 launch set for July 12?

by: Chris SmithJuly 11, 2012

Google’s Nexus 7 is slowly but surely approaching its official launch as both Google and other third-party retailers are getting ready to accommodate your tablet needs – and by that I mean shipping the Nexus 7 or making the device available in stores.

While we wait for Google to announce the release date of the Nexus 7 – somewhere around mid July – we’ll tell you that pre-orders are still available to anyone interested in the device. In fact, Office Depot is the latest retailer to offer Google Nexus 7 pre-orders. According to a leaked document dug up by Droid-Life, Office Depot “will be authorized to pre-sell the new 16GB Google Nexus [...]

Jelly Bean 4.1.1 Build JRO03C Rolling Out Now to HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7

by: Derek RossJuly 10, 2012

Following the release of Jelly Bean’s source code yesterday, today Google has announced via their Nexus account on Google+ that Android Jelly Bean 4.1.1 has began rolling out to supported devices. The devices to get Jelly Bean’s awesomeness first will be the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexuses and the Nexus 7.

If you’re running an official Yakju or Takju build on your HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, you can begin checking for updates now by going to Settings>About>System updates and see if you can pull the update. If you were lucky enough to snag a Nexus 7 already, you too can start spamming your update button.

The 4.1.1 build changelog for the Nexus 7 boasts a few [...]

Google Nexus 7 shipping in 1-2 weeks, mid-July launch still in the picture

by: Chris SmithJuly 10, 2012

We have recently reported not once, but twice, on the potential release date of the hottest Android tablet in town, the Google Nexus 7, and we’re about to tease you some more with potential release dates. Well, technically it’s Google that does the teasing as the company has updated the ship date on the Nexus 7’s Google Play page from 3-4 weeks down to 1-2 weeks.

That means that Google will make that mid-July launch it mentioned during the Google I/O keynote, so in case you have already pre-ordered the device, you should be hearing from your local delivery service in a matter of days.

However, we still don’t have a fixed launch date [...]

Google Nexus 7 vs Apple iPad Mini vs Amazon Kindle Fire 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0)

by: Mike AndriciJuly 10, 2012

Although budget tablets have been the object of numerous discussions over the past six months or so, when Google announced the Asus-built Nexus 7 tablet in late June at the Google I/O conference, the speculation dam just imploded as most of the online tech media has begun publishing stories on how other tablet manufacturers will respond to this move.

As it turns out, all of the major tablet manufacturers are believed to make their presence felt in the 7-inch tablet market by the end of September: Apple is rumored to be working on an iPad Mini, Amazon is bound to release a successor to the original 7-inch budget tablet, the Kindle Fire, while [...]

Nexus 7 release date getting closer, as more shipping reports hit the web

by: Chris SmithJuly 9, 2012

The recently announced Google Nexus 7 is going to hit stores in the very near future in various markets and we have various shipping reports hitting the web from left and right to prove that.

When Google unveiled the device in late June during the first Google I/O keynote, the company did not reveal launch dates for its first tablet ever. Instead the company kicked off pre-orders for the Nexus 7 in U.S., Canada and Australia, and we soon learned that UK Android fans will also get the device in the very near future. In addition to Google Play, interested consumers will be able to pick up the device from a variety of third party electronics [...]

Camera launcher app for Google Nexus 7 released on Play Store

by: Bams SadewoJuly 6, 2012

For a $199.99 tablet, Google and Asus have packed the Nexus 7 with a chock-full of features that you wouldn’t normally expect to see at such price point, especially on a device that’s released by major brands. One of the things that is lacking on the tablet, which shouldn’t be missed too much by many, is a camera on the back, though the Nexus 7 does come with a front camera for video chatting.

The lucky few who got their hands on a Nexus 7 before its official outing, however, found out that the tablet doesn’t come with a camera launcher. Luckily, MoDaCo’s Paul O’Brien has come to the rescue by releasing a camera launcher app for the Nexus 7, which allows users to [...]
