FTC slams privacy efforts in kids apps

A new report by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that many of the apps which are designed for children collect data about the devices the kids are using without informing parents. The apps, which are available for Android via Google's Play Store and for iOS via Apple's iTunes app store, send information from the mobile device to ad networks, analytics companies, or other third parties.

Lexibook joins the kiddie tablet war with the Junior and Master Tablets

The two new kiddie tabs are called the Junior Tablet and Master Tablet and come from Lexibook, a French-based tech manufacturer that doesn’t say much. In such a suddenly crowded and competitive niche, the name of the company behind the slates might be of grand importance, although on the surface we can’t say these two look very different from the FunTab Pro, for example.

We’ve seen several decent tabs targeting children released during the past few months, with the Fuhu Nabi 2, Archos ChildPad and Toys R Us Tabeo being the first few names that come to mind. Still, there seems to be more room for competition, and now a new player is getting into the game.

Kid-friendly Fuhu Nabi 2 tablet rooted to work with Google Apps

Although we don’t usually pay much attention to kid-friendly tablets due to their usual modest hardware configurations, Fuhu’s Nabi 2 is certainly a whole different kettle of fish. Not only is the 7-incher available for sale for just $200, but it also comes with a quad-core 1.3GHz Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0 ICS, being perfect for running much more complex apps and games than just Angry Birds or Temple Run.

Nabi maker Fuhu suing Toys R Us for using “trade secrets” in designing the Tabeo kid-friendly tab

Fuhu, a tech company founded in 2008 and best known for creating the Nabi Tablet for children, is suing giant retailer Toys R Us for fraud, breach of contract, intellectual theft and a couple of other such goodies.
