How it works: Gorilla Glass

Much like the first edition print of any comic book hero’s tale, Corning Glass was born of a science experiment gone wrong. In 1952 a scientist at Corning placed a piece of photosensitive glass in a furnace for testing. At some point the furnace skyrocketed from 600 degrees Celsius to 900 degrees. Expecting a ruined sample, the scientist was surprised to find an opaque sheet of material rather than a melted blob of molten mess.

Is the Gorilla glass back of the Nexus 4 prone to cracking? A number of Nexus 4 users reported problems with the glass back of their devices, ranging from minor nicks to complete shattering.

Let's face it, Corning Gorilla Glass has pretty much become a household name for most of us techies. While Gorilla Glass first got its start on the original iPhone, it has quickly become quite popular on a wide range of mobile devices. Now Corning has even announced that its Gorilla Glass technology has been featured in over one billion devices worldwide.

I can’t speak for others, but the way I see things, one dark side to daily covering Android news is that you often feel somewhat disappointed when new devices are officially announced, especially if the device in question has generated a decent amount of hype before it is actually revealed – and that happens quite a lot. Personally, I always feel like manufacturers could take it one step further but they don’t, mainly because they still want to be able to bring a minor improvement to a line in about six months or so.
