Being a gamer myself, I love puzzle games. I believe that out of any game, puzzle-based mobile games pass the time more than any other category of entertainment.

Angry Birds, ranking as the most popular mobile game of the past year is significantly hard to beat. Even though it is simply flinging birds into stones and wood to obtain those beloved “3 stars”, it can be tricky at times.

However, it is time for Angry Birds to step down from its thrown as the king of gaming fun.

“Where’s My Water?”, released by Disney on September 22, 2011 represents itself as true contender. Now the name might sound a bit odd, most likely because it is a question.

Basis of the Game

The title describes the game well. You are introduced to an alligator named Swampy. He is unlike other alligators, as he adapts primarily to human life an enjoys being clean.

Because of Swampy’s abnormal actions, “Cranky”, a terrifying alligator antagonist and friends try to stop the water supply towards Swampy’s house.

Yeah this sounds unfair, but is your job to stop these villains and resupply the water for a clean bath.

Obstacles and Challenging Objectives

Now the game might seem pretty simple, right? All you have to do is interact with your touchscreen device, digging into dirt to guide the clean water towards Swampy’s bathtub.

Along the way you will face tough angles, acidic water that mutates the clean water into a toxic chemical, as well as moss that grows with the touch of water.

Similar to Angry Birds, you have the ability to collect three ducks along the way. Makes sense for a bath. Below is the trailer released by Disney that shows you the objective, and short story revolving the game.

Round Up

All in all, I believe that this game has a lot of potential. When you think about it shows an educational value to stay clean in which the game serves as both a kid friendly and older generation entertainment.

I also love how the physics-based puzzles get more challenging, and really make you think. Good Job Disney, because out of a rating, it is a true 5/5.

After starting a match, one must have a proper income to manage their army of units. Therefore, “Coondie” mines will increase your flow of income. Now that you have established your funds, you can move onto building an army. Start by choosing from 6 ground and air units and plan your attack carefully. Your goal is to defend your base from being hit by the enemy units and to destroy your enemy by crashing 15 units into his base.

One of the best features of smartphones is their access to hundreds of thousands of applications and games. Furthermore, there are multiple app stores to suit different smartphone operating systems. And of course, with the competition comes a battle (and a versus article).

Apple’s App Store started it all. The store quickly rose to the top and had the most apps, and certainly the most downloads. However, with both the App Store and the Android Market reaching 500,000 apps just recently, it seems that the tides are changing. Therefore, developers that make apps for both stores will have to choose which market to work with first, and Netflix demonstrates how one store will have to wait behind the other.

Just recently, Netflix pushed out a new update to their Android Tablet app. Included in the press release, were hints of an updated user interface and one major delay. That delay was worded as such, “The new tablet experience should be available for members with iPads in a few weeks.”

Although to any normal consumer, this “delay” would be thought of as a few weeks, the Android community will see it as years and will soon turn Android  into the world’s most widely-used smartphone operating system.

The numbers don’t lie. Android is on the verge of taking 50% of the total smartphone market share. In addition, now that there are as many apps in the Android market as in the App Store, developers are turning to Android as their prime destination for their apps. This is not only because of the number of users but also because, “Android Market is an open service that lets you distribute your apps to handsets” and, “The Android SDK has the tools, sample code, and docs you need to create great apps”

The company stirred up a decent amount of excitement with devices such as the Xperia Play, Tablet S and Tablet P, but according to the SCE Chairman, it’s about time that the PlayStation Suite flew out of the nest. “This isn’t an ecosystem where we want to keep everything within the Sony family,” Hirai noted during the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong. “This is not just for Sony devices.”

Hirai also mentioned that they are currently discussing running the Suite on non-Sony devices with other companies. This would open a lot of possibilities — not only for Sony, but also for the millions of gamers who wished that PS games were playable on their Android devices.

Announced earlier this year, the PlayStation Suite is a cross-platform software framework that aims to deliver the PlayStation gaming experience to devices that run on Android 2.3 and beyond. Things will get more interesting in the coming month with the release of a software development kit (SDK) enabling developers to build games for PS Certified devices that are deployable to Android devices. Basically, that means being able to play the same game on a console such as the PS3 and on mobile Android device such as the Tablet S.

Though we can look forward to a graphic experience worthy of the PlayStation brand, there is the question of speed and smoothness, as some SDK-developed games may run slower than those specifically created for Android devices due to console translation. Right now, all we can do is wait, as SDK-developed games will most probably be released next year.

There are no details yet regarding the PS Suite’s expansion to other non-Sony devices. According to Hirai, the company will announce developments when the time is right — so let the clock-watching begin.

You got some top class 3D flying action right here. Destroy enemies, destroy buildings, just make sure you get to the next stage. I honestly couldn’t put it down when I sampled it and everything gets high marks from the sounds to the graphics to the gameplay. Definitely a must buy.

Angry Birds Rio (free)

The Cowboys & Aliens app centers around the title character of Zeke kicking alien butt. It’s done in a rather unique style for Gameloft – instead of the usual 3D adventure, you get a traditional 2D side-scroller. The graphics harken back to those old beat-em-ups from the 90s and the game has a pleasant retro quality to it. Players are fitted out with a revolver, rope, and “space rifle” as options on how to take down aliens as they move across the screen.

You only need at least Android 1.5 to play so this isn’t exactly going to be heavy game for your phone. However, Gameloft was a bit remiss in including details about which phones/devices are compatible with the game. With the company’s rather hit and miss reputation in mind, buyers should be wary about buying the game outright. Waiting a few days for an update on compatibility would be a good idea.

Still, for those who don’t want to wait, they can grab Cowboys & Aliens from the Android Market for just $2.99 – pretty cheap but standard price for a commercial game of this quality.

It works well with Android and comes with Xperia Play control support – which is a double bonus for Xperia Play owners.

So, if you’ve seen the movie or familiar with the comic book, you should know by now that you’ll be playing Captain America in this game. Set in World War II, it has you fighting the forces of Cap’s archenemy, the Red Skill. So what can you expect from this baby?

Well, it’s essentially a beat-em-up. You’ll be using your combat moves to kick ass and take names of HYDRA soldiers. It’s got very fluid controls and expect to do a lot of stunts like wall runs, slides, and combo attacks to take down the enemy. It’s got 24 levels and has multiple pathways to end them. It’s even got hidden areas for completists and unlockables for achievement hogs. The game’s plot is written by Marvel writer Christos Gage – which means you can expect a rollicking ride. Cut scene art by Marvel artists Ron Lim and Christopher Sotomayor and a great soundtrack round out the features.

If all of that makes you interested, well, you can snap up a copy of Captain America at the Android Market for only $0.99. With all of the content in it, that’s pretty much a bargain. Although, you better check if your device is supported before buying.
