I just received a bit of New Year’s Eve cheer from my friends at General Mobile. I now have some decent specs and photos for GM’s second Android powered smartphone, the General Mobile COSMOS.
The specs for the COSMOS, below, are much better than those of the DSTL1 that General Mobile released earlier this year.Android 2.0 (Eclair) 900/1900/2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA 850/900/1800/1900MHz GSM/EDGE Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 w/A2DP, GPS 3.2-inch 320 x 480 HVGA capacitive touchscreen w/accelerometer 5 megapixel autofocus camera 256MB flash, 128MB SDRAM, microSD card slot (16GB max) 1500mAh battery FM radio, USB [...]
This one is coming out of left field so read it with a healthy dose of skepticism, but a rumor fresh out AndroidSPIN claims that the T-Mobile G1 will be upgraded to Android 2.0, possibly even Android 2.0.1. Supposedly, OTA updates for both Android versions have been prepared and both updates are already in the hands of a few choice people. The rumor does not specify which update will be rolled out or when the update may occur but we will keep our fingers crossed that Eclair for the G1 will be coming soon.
It’s been a busy morning, indeed. Amid all of this Motorola MILESTONE news, I managed to get the full review of the Motorola DROID for Verizon posted on MobileBurn.com.
I came away being much more impressed with it than my initial impressions might have suggested. Sure, there are some ergonomic issues that bug me, and I stumbled upon a few minor bugs, but overall I was really loving the device.
I’m going to keep it around for a bit, too – just because I can. It’s a fun device, and the new Google Maps Navigation is a great tool for something that’s basically free.
So head on [...]
On its Twitter account, HTC yesterday said that an Android 2.0 update was forthcoming for the HTC Hero. The tweet in question didn’t specify if the update would be available for both the EU version and the Sprint CDMA version, though.
The rumors are true! Hero will be getting an Eclair update. We ask for your patience as we update Sense for the fancy new Android OS.
OK, here is the video I promised. I’ll pop in some live photos once I get a bit more situated this morning. Since shooting this video, I’ve had a bit of time to play with the phone. So far I like it, but don’t love it.
The display is brilliant, plain and simple. The keyboard, not so much. It is usable, but far lacking when compared with the keyboard on the CLIQ. The touch sensitive controls work nicely, and the camera seems decent during non-flash sessions, at least.
Exchange support appears to be spotty, and the entire multi-account support in Android 2.0/Eclair might be as well. I never [...]
The Android Developers Blog has announced that the new version of the Android SDK now supports Android 2.0, the “Eclair” OS that is running on the much-hyped Motorola DROID that is set to launch soon.
Among the changes is new and broader support for synchronizing an Android device with other services. This will allow developers to build apps to easily sync with other services, like social networks and what appears to be built-in Microsoft Exchange support. A new “quick contact” widget provides users with quick access to calling, emailing, or texting a contact just by tapping on the contact’s image, and there is also a new combined inbox feature [...]
From the same site that first brought us video of the HTC Tattoo (then known as the Click) comes the first video of a new 5-inch display equipped Streak from Dell, which runs Android 2.0 (Eclair).
It is said to feature a wide-VGA (800 480 pixel) capacitive touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, and 3G connectivity. That part souds good. The part that concerns me is the supposed 1300mAh battery. Considering that the HTC Imagio and other recent devices that have crossed my desk come equipped with 1500mAh batteries, I wonder just how long a 3G equipped Android device with such a massive [...]
I noticed that Verizon is running a TV commercial that offers the same basic content as its promotion website for the Motorola DROID while watching Amazing Race this evening. The only difference is that instead of a countdown timer, the commercial says “coming in November.”
This could mean that we’ll see an unveiling on October 30 and actual device availability in November.
Not much detail yet, but the Boy Genius has posted a photo to his twitter feed that shows a picture of the Motorola DROID he has in his posession. Interestingly, the device appears to be running Android 2.0 – Eclair. We haven’t seen this version of the OS on any other devices so far, and 1.6 just very recently started making it onto the market on devices like the HTC Tattoo.
More details when we get them.
Back in March we attended a UK Press Launch for Acer’s up-coming smartphone range. At the time it seemed to focus a lot on Windows Mobile, and this was justified because Acer believed there to be a good level of synchronisation between Windows computer and Windows mobile devices. This is clearly a priority for them. However, during the event I asked some probing questions into the likelihood of Android on an Acer device, and the responses were both agreeable and enlightened. Acer were not too cagey about the matter and since then we’ve reported on how the Philippines based Business Mirror believes that Acer plans to release an Android powered [...]
