GPNC Korea Android HDTV

GPNC Korea Android HDTV

GPNC Korea have leaked mock-up promotional images of their forthcoming HD television running Android 1.5. It will be powered by a 833MHz ARM Cortex A8 chip and it even claims to support NTSC and ATSC broadcast standards. Given this information, it is odd that the USA is not one of the countries where this device is supposed to land. Indeed, apparently the UK will also miss out as well. Nonetheless, if you live in one of the European Scandinavian countries or perhaps the Netherlands or and Poland, then you are in luck. The HDTV is set for release in a …

Minor firmware update for T-Mobile G1

Minor firmware update for T-Mobile G1

It seems that one of those minor updates for the T-Mobile G1 that we were expecting has been rolling out over the past couple of days. Nothing too exciting, but an update is an update. You can read more about it at the T-Mobile discussion forums. [via AndroidGuys]

Everybody have their T-Mobile USA G1 Cupcake update now?

Hello-Cupcake-Android-1-5-OTA-Updates-Are-Official

It seems that a good percentage of folks on T-Mobile USA’s network have received their automatic over-the-air Cupcake updates by now – but still not everybody. If you haven’t received your update yet, leave a comment below and tell us where you are located. Update: Doesn’t seem to be geographically based, as we have some people/families with multiple phones reporting that one phone has received the update while another hasn’t.

General Mobile just contacted us and has informed us that it plans on offering its dual-SIM Android powered DSTL1 smartphone for sale in the U.S. and Turkey at the end of June. The DSTL1 will be running the Android 1.5 (Cupcake) OS and features a 624MHz CPU, dual-SIM capability, a 5 megapixel camera with flash (made by Sony), and one of Sharp’s resistive touchscreen displays (WQVGA resolution, probably 400×240 pixels).  An FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, and WiFi are also on board, and it provides 4GB of storage capacity thanks to an included microSD card (16GB cards supported).  A leather case, …

T-Mobile UK G1 owners getting a security update for Cupcake?

T-Mobile UK G1 owners getting a security update for Cupcake?

We’ve been hearing buzz that T-Mobile UK has released another firmware update that addresses a security hole found in the recently released Android 1.5 “Cupcake” update for the T-Mobile G1. Phandroid.com has posted a list of user reports that appear to back that up. We have no other information at this time, but this certainly would help explain why T-Mobile USA chose to delay its own Cupcake update.

More video of HTC’s ‘Rosie’ new UI for the HTC Hero

Not too much to say here, just a nice video from XDA-Developers.com’s Haykuro showing the yet-to-be-announced HTC’s Hero’s ROM running in an emulator. The new UI, called Rosie, it appears, does for Android what HTC’s TouchFLO 3D did for Windows Mobile. Thanks to Haykuro for uploading the source AVI files!

T-Mobile USA delays Cupcake while Gmail mobile receives labels

T-Mobile USA delays Cupcake while Gmail mobile receives labels

It turns out that T-Mobile USA have delayed the roll out of Cupcake to the G1. Apparently, they are continuing to optimize Cupcake to ensure that it works perfectly and that the roll out is trouble free. Sitting over in the UK, I can confirm that many T-Mobile UK users are able to use Cupcake satisfactorily despite the fact that it is developed over in the USA. Why T-Mobile UK were able to distribute the update quicker than T-Mobile remains a mystery. Alas, I think we can rest assured knowing that very little optimization is going on and it is …

T-Mobile USA announces Android 1.5 Cupcake update for G1 owners. UK updates have started already

T-Mobile USA announces Android 1.5 Cupcake update for G1 owners. UK updates have started already

T-Mobile USA has issued a press release stating that T-Mobile G1 owners will start receiving over the air firmware updates for Android 1.5, the “Cupcake” release, starting at the end of next week. Of course it was widely reported that some users had already received the update, though it was obvious that the roll out was very slow. It also appears that the T-Mobile UK Android 1.5 update for the G1 is already on its way out.  Somebody grabbed the new firmware and has made it available, so that users can do a manual update to the official T-Mobile UK …

T-Mobile USA and UK releasing over the air Android 1.5 Cupcake firmware update now

T-Mobile USA and UK releasing over the air Android 1.5 Cupcake firmware update now

Yes, the time has come, G1 owners.  Both T-Mobile USA and T-Mobile UK have started rolling out the Android 1.5 firmware update for the T-Mobile G1 smartphone.  This means that you early Android adopters will finally get access to all of the features long promised by Cupcake. No idea how long it will take for all of the G1 smartphones out there to receive the update, but users in the UK and USA both have started receiving it. There are likely going to be some software application issues with the new firmware, though.  Some things that were allowed in the …

Pre-order the HTC Magic from Vodafone now!

Vodafone has just put up a release date for its new HTC Magic – it’s due to be released on May 5th.  As was previously reported, the HTC Magic will come with the necessary Cupcake update to the OS.  The phone is only available for pay monthly plans, and is priced as free for a 35 pound per month plan, and as high as 293 pounds on a 15 pound per month plan. This is the first worldwide release date for the HTC Magic, and an announcement for the States is still yet to come. [via EngadgetMobile]

Install HTC Magic’s “Cupcake” software to your G1 now!

Install HTC Magic’s “Cupcake” software to your G1 now!

Haykuro’s Blog has recently announced that they have successfully ported software from the HTC Magic/G2 to be run on the T-Mobile G1.  While the build is being reported as completely stable, you may still experience some issues (as listed on the Google Project site).  The installation requires root access and a memory card, and requires knowledge in flashing the ROM on the device.  Haykuro has, however, pre-included a variety of worldwide APNs on the software, making it easier for those on AT&T and T-Mobile in the states. You can find the instructions here. You can download the builds here. [via …

UI look and feel changing a bit in Android 1.5

UI look and feel changing a bit in Android 1.5

Romain Guy at the Android Developers Blog posted a little bit about some of the UI changes that we’ll see in Android 1.5.  In the image above, for example, you can see what the “New Contact” screen looks like on 1.5 (the right), and how it appears on the current 1.1 release that we’re used to. There will be other changes, but most of them will probably be subtle – or at least won’t break any existing applications.  The only thing that could cause developers trouble, it seems, is the new smaller minimum button size.  Basically, the smallest possible button …

Google releases Android 1.5 SDK early look

Google releases Android 1.5 SDK early look

Yesterday Google released an early look at the Android OS 1.5 software developer kit, which includes developer support for all of the new Cupcake features that we are going to see in devices like the HTC Magic from Vodafone. The new SDK also gives developers the ability to write programs for both the 1.1 release and the new 1.5 release, and going forward will continue to support multiple versions of the platform. Developers can download the Android 1.5 SDK here.

Video: Cupcake’s growing feature list demonstrated

In light of the new Cupcake build that is finding its way onto developer’s G1 Android devices, we thought we would do a little round up of the videos that have hit the big world wide web over the last few days. We will also discuss a few of the new functions we look forward to experiencing sometime in the not too distant future. Aside from the heavily anticipated on-screen keyboard that Cupcake is probably most famous for, users can one day expect the following key features: Live folders New and improved glamorous window transitions Smiley’s in the messaging application …
