Samsung has just released the whitepaper for their long-awaited Exynos 5250 SoC, now called the Exynos 5 Dual, and there’s a lot of interesting information to be discovered in it.
The Exynos 5 Dual will be the world’s first Cortex A15-based chip, when it will ship later this year, presumably inside the 11.8-inch tablet Samsung is going to launch later this year. Samsung had to wait for this A15-based chip to support the very high WQXGA (2560×1600) resolution of the Galaxy Tab 11.6.

Intel went FinFET (or tri-gate transistors as they call them) at 22nm with Ivy Bridge, and now the #1 foundry, TSMC, and the #2 foundry, UMC, will also go to FinFET for the next gen 20 nm process. However, mass production of 20nm ARM chips will probably not happen until 2014, considering 28nm is barely here in 2012, and it usually takes 2 years for the new process technology to be ready.
Apparently, the planar FinFET technology that these foundries intend to use is better suited for mobile SoC’s, like the ones from ARM, and it should bring a performance improvement of at least 15%-20% over Intel’s own FinFET [...]
Allwinner is a chip maker not a tablet maker, but right now, the Chinese company’s products are a very popular choice for ~$100 Android devices, whether we’re talking about cheap Android tablets or those sub-$100 pocket PCs based on ARM chips.
Allwinner chips usually have a 1-1.5 Ghz Cortex A8 CPU, coupled with a powerful Mali400 GPU (same as the one in the Galaxy S2), which enables even low-end tablets to smoothly run ICS and to play any type of HD content flawlessly.
Analysts expect that 40 million tablets will be shipped in China alone this year, and it seems Allwinner’s chips will be in 60% of those tablets (or roughly 24 million). [...]
ARM has been getting a lot of praises on their idea for the big.LITTLE technology, because it shows them not only a leader in mobile chip performance, but they are moving forward with higher and higher performance. Their chips still remain low-power overall and in the future they claim they will achieve this through big.LITTLE technology.
Big.LITTLE means they are going to pair up a very low-power in-order CPU like Cortex A7, with their most powerful out-of-order CPU yet, the Cortex A15. TI announced the OMAP 5430 for the first time back in 2010, and I remember how excited people were about it, even though they should’ve moderated their excitement a little bit. The chip wasn’t supposed to come out for 2 years and who knows what we would see until then!
