Motorola CLIQ, CLIQ XT, BackFlip Android 2.1 updates pushed back to late Q3, early Q4

According to a recent post by a Motorola employee on the Motorola Support Forums, Moto has been having a bit more trouble getting OpenGL working on the CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and BackFlip than expected, which is delaying the already long delayed update to Android 2.1 for these devices, which was originally promised for Q2 of 2010.  The statement reads as follows: The quality of experience for consumers is a top priority in providing upgrades to our current product portfolio. In working through Android 2.1 upgrades for CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and Backflip, certain hardware configurations have been limiting upgrade capabilities. We …

End of year road-map from T-Mobile, leaked

According to a slide published on Android Spin we can expect five additional Android based devices for T-Mobile later this year. These are on top of the Motorola Charm and Samsung Vibrant. From studying the slide it appears as though the Motorola Cliq and Cliq XT could receive an update this summer around August, but we currently have no official word on whether this is the case. Indeed, the Motorola Charm is only shipping with Android 2.1, so it too would be due an upgrade, possibly in September. Also around this time we can say hello to a HTC device …

We will continue to work to deliver it as soon as possible and apologize that we have been unable to provide an upgrade to these users in Q2 as planned. We are …

Motorola sends three MOTOBLUR handsets to Canada

Good news for Canadians on Wednesday as Motorola announced that it is bringing three MOTOBLUR handsets to Canada with all the major wireless carriers. All three devices have been previously announced and include the Motorola DEXT (CLIQ), the Motorola BACKFLIP, and the Motorola QUENCH (CLIQ XT). Despite their common MOTOBLUR interface, each handset offers something different for the Canadian Android user- the DEXT features a side sliding QWERTY keyboard, the BACKFLIP offers an unusual, backwards-folding, external QWERTY keyboard and the QUENCH sheds the physical keyboard and adopts a full touchscreen design. If you need a refresher on each handset, check …

Motorola CLIQ update received – here’s the video…

Don’t get too excited.  For one, this video is just showing the actual firmware update processes – for those that are curious.  Secondly, the update itself is not that interesting, either. A new app for moving contacts to or from a SIM card is available now, and imeem is gone, but otherwise there’s not much to see.  Home screen might be a bit snappier, too. So anyway, here’s the video of the update process in 4x speed so you don’t have to watch 10 minutes of not much happening.  You can now watch not much happening in 25% of that …

New Motorola CLIQ firmware coming, Android 2.1 still not included

New Motorola CLIQ firmware coming, Android 2.1 still not included

It appears that a new update for the Motorola CLIQ, 1.3.18, is starting the process of being distributed to T-Mobile’s Motorola CLIQ users now. The update promises further improvements to the phone’s battery life, better Bluetooth support, and better touchscreen accuracy – all things I’m personally in need of.  There’s also some corporate mail updates, a new rev of Quick Office, and bug fixes, too. More info available at Motorola, with even more detail here. When I get my hands on the update I will be sure to let you all know. If you get it before me, though, please …

Motorola Cliq rooted, custom ROMs coming soon

Motorola Cliq rooted, custom ROMs coming soon

And another one bites the dust – fresh out of  the modmymoto forums is news that the Motorola Cliq has been rooted. As is the case with freshly rooted devices, the root is merely proof of concept and offers no practical advantage to the average user, at least not yet. TheDudesAndroid, who posted up the instructions for rooting, is working on a custom Android 1.5 ROM and possibly an Android 2.1 port. Rooting, ROMs, and the removal of MOTOBLUR – Good things to come for all you Cliq owners out there! [via Gizmodo and RedmondPie]

Motorola CLIQ update photos, notes

Motorola CLIQ update photos, notes

My Motorola CLIQ received its update last night and I have shot a few photos of the process and the new Battery Manager features that it brings to the table.  You can think of the Battery Manager as a profiles system for battery use.  It could still use some additional features, but it is a good start and something that all phones should feature. I haven’t had much time to test the changes so far (I’m flying back to Philadelphia tonight), but I can already see an improved response from the touchscreen display.  Moto also claims improved battery life when …

Did you get your Motorola CLIQ update?

Did you get your Motorola CLIQ update?

Anyone who uses a Motorola CLIQ should have received an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Unfortunately this doesn’t upgrade the CLIQ from 1.5 to 1.6, or anything drastic like that. Instead, it updates the current version, Android 1.5, but seems to solve a lot of the original issues CLIQ users were facing. According to the official announcement, the update will predominantly help improve battery life, as well as how your Bluetooth devices pair with the CLIQ. Among other things, it will also help the responsiveness of the screen, which we know some people noticed more than others. It should be possible …

Motorola DROID accounts for 24% of Android web trafic after 12 days

Mobile advertising firm AdMob has released some statistics about mobile web use, and the numbers coming out of the Android segment are quite interesting. As of November 18th, only days after its November 6th initial availability, the Motorola DROID for Verizon Wireless made up a whopping 24 percent of all Android smartphone traffic going through AdMob’s servers.  For comparison, the Motorola CLIQ for T-Mobile, which was available in stores on November 2nd, made up only 6 percent of the Android traffic and the T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream, which has been out for over a year, came in at 36 percent.
