Motorola CLIQ, CLIQ XT, BackFlip Android 2.1 updates pushed back to late Q3, early Q4

According to a recent post by a Motorola employee on the Motorola Support Forums, Moto has been having a bit more trouble getting OpenGL working on the CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and BackFlip than expected, which is delaying the already long delayed update to Android 2.1 for these devices, which was originally promised for Q2 of 2010.  The statement reads as follows: The quality of experience for consumers is a top priority in providing upgrades to our current product portfolio. In working through Android 2.1 upgrades for CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and Backflip, certain hardware configurations have been limiting upgrade capabilities. We …

Motorola posts update timeline for BACKFLIP and other Android smartphones

Motorola has posted information on its support forums that outlines the expected Android 2.1 update time frames for its various Android smartphones.  All of the non-Chinese models seem to be accounted for in the table, but not all devices currently have a target time frame. Of note, the Motorola BACKFLIP for AT&T is tagged for getting an Android 2.1 update in the third quarter of 2010. The full update table is available after the jump.

Motorola BACKFLIP review posted

Motorola BACKFLIP review posted

I’ve posted my full review of the Motorola BACKFLIP for AT&T on MobileBurn. Oddly enough, I like the device more now than I did originally, which bodes well for how real world users might react to the phone. I still dislike the large keyboard, and I think the BACKTRACK directional controller’s a bad idea, but the camera is solid, the touchscreen is nice, and the signal reception seemed really good.  MOTOBLUR is good, too, though far from perfect.  But what really bothers me is the fact that you can only install apps that come from the Android Market.  That likely …

Video: Motorola BACKFLIP for AT&T review

I meant to post this yesterday, but the business side of this web stuff got in the way (tax season approaches, you know).  In any case, here are my two videos of the Motorola BACKFLIP for AT&T.  I’m currently working on a full written review for MobileBurn.com, but I can share the videos and some thoughts with you before that is complete. For starters, the BACKTRACK trackpad controller on the rear side of the display is really annoying for people with big hands like me. I had to disable it to keep from inadvertently moving the cursor around the screen …

Motorola BACKFLIP backfires on AT&T

Motorola BACKFLIP backfires on AT&T

The Motorola BACKFLIP debuted this weekend on AT&T and the first impressions of this uniquely designed handset are not so favorable. Folks that picked up AT&T’s first Android handset have been shocked to discover that the device has been crippled by the nation’s second largest wireless provider. According to information posted at the xda-developers forums, new BACKFLIP owners are reporting that AT&T has loaded the device with AT&T-specific applications which can not be removed, has restricted the user’s ability to install third applications that reside outside of the Android Market, and has committed the greatest of heresies by replacing Google …

Motorola BACKFLIP on AT&T to use Yahoo!, not Google

Motorola BACKFLIP on AT&T to use Yahoo!, not Google

In a move that might surprise some, it appears that AT&T has had Motorola configure it’s BACKFLIP smartphone to use Yahoo! as the search engine of choice.  Yahoo! and AT&T have an ongoing agreement that stipulates that Yahoo! is the default search engine on AT&T’s MEdia Net web portal. As a result, there’s no voice searching capability on the phone and the Google search homescreen widget is nowhere to be found.  Yahoo is also the default search engine in the BACKFLIP’s web browser.

Motorola sends three MOTOBLUR handsets to Canada

Motorola sends three MOTOBLUR handsets to Canada

Good news for Canadians on Wednesday as Motorola announced that it is bringing three MOTOBLUR handsets to Canada with all the major wireless carriers. All three devices have been previously announced and include the Motorola DEXT (CLIQ), the Motorola BACKFLIP, and the Motorola QUENCH (CLIQ XT). Despite their common MOTOBLUR interface, each handset offers something different for the Canadian Android user- the DEXT features a side sliding QWERTY keyboard, the BACKFLIP offers an unusual, backwards-folding, external QWERTY keyboard and the QUENCH sheds the physical keyboard and adopts a full touchscreen design. If you need a refresher on each handset, check …

AT&T to receive Motorola Backflip 7th March

AT&T to receive Motorola Backflip 7th March

AT&T are looking to release five Android based handsets in the first couple of quarters this year. However, things are starting to hot up right now as we’re expecting to see the Motorola Backflip land on Sunday 7th March and will cost $100 along with a contract. For your money you get Motorola’s social UI called Motoblur along with a 3.1-inch touch screen and 5MP camera. The Backflip aquired its name because of the glorified D-pad touch-panel on the back of this device. We’re not totally sold that this is a useful addition but will wait on the consumer verdict. …

More odd details on the rumored Motorola MOTOSPLIT

More odd details on the rumored Motorola MOTOSPLIT

A new rendering as well as some odd form factor details have emerged regarding Motorola’s MOTOSPLIT.  The anonymous tipster goes into detail about a Q3 release on AT&T’s network, identical specs to the BACKFLIP (which seems like a step backward for a phone releasing Q3) and how the actual side splitting keyboard is going to work.  Here are the exact remarks: The keyboard keys are inset and probably have no tactile feedback, however, they should be quite easy to use. It looks like the cutouts are pretty finger-friendly, as they contour to the shape of a standard finger. Under those …

Motorola Backflip shows off in new promotional video

Motorola Backflip shows off in new promotional video

Motorola has posted an official video showing off its unconventionally designed Backflip in action.  The video is only 36 seconds long and has no real information to show that can’t be seen in our video posted last week, but it is a nicely put together promotion.  As we reported about a month ago, the phone is said to be heading to AT&T and resembles the Motorola CLIQ, sans the opposite keyboard. This phone has been receiving nothing but mixed reviews due to its obviously backwards looking keyboard and Backtrack feature, a trackpad located on the back of the screen that …

Video: Motorola BACKFLIP

Here’s a quick video demo of the Motorola BACKFLIP from the launch event last night here in Las Vegas.  I have to admit that I’ve not formed a solid opinion of the phone yet.  It works like a CLIQ in terms of software, which is fine, but the hardware is likely to polarize people. Personally, I found the keyboard and trackpad on the back of the display both difficult to use.  In any case, watch the video to get a look at the BACKFLIP doing its thing.

Motorola to introduce two new Android handsets with OLED displays at CES 2010?

CES 2010 is coming fast and the rumors about what will be announced next week at the industry’s largest trade show are starting to flow. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry jumped on the Android rumor bandwagon by predicting that Motorola will debut two new Android handsets with OLED displays during its pre-CES press conference on January 6th. One handset will be a Google experience phone (i.e., no MOTOBLUR) with a QWERTY keyboard and is headed to AT&T, while the other will debut with Verizon Wireless and will feature a soft keyboard. It will be interesting to see how this …
