Dell Streak running Android 2.1

by: James TromansAugust 6, 2010

Android 2.1 on Dell Streak

The Dell Streak has been available in the UK for a while now, plodding away running Android 1.6. It isn’t even available in the US yet, but the device is set to receive an update to Android 2.1 in the near future. Engadget have managed to get a sneak peak of the device running the goodies, but it’s not all rosey. The device is still optimised for landscale mode and the home screen only offers support for 24 icons instead of 32. Indeed, Android 2.2 is out now, so perhaps Dell will release this pupy directly with Android 2.2 stateside. Anyway, video of this device with Android 2.1 after the jump.

Acer Stream to run Android 2.1

by: James TromansJuly 26, 2010

Acer Stream

Acer have just announced their latest high-end Android multimedia smartphone. This is certainly one to watch and is clearly aimed towards the Samsung Galaxy S and Nexus One market. Indeed, the Stream will offer an AMOLED 3.7” WVGA display with 3G+ HSDPA 7.2 Mbps download connectivity. Naturally, the device offers Bluetooth but we are also pleasantly surprised to see WiFi n included too.

In terms of the core processing unit, the Acer Stream packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, with its  512 MB RAM. By their own admission, this is Acer’s fastest handset to date. The 5MP camera can also record at 720p HD video and this [...]

Android 2.1 ported to the HTC HD2

by: James TromansJuly 1, 2010

Android on the HTC HD2

A group of developers called HTC Linux have put together a YouTube video revealing a working port of Ubuntu and Android 2.1 on the HTC HD2 WinMo device.

We use the word ‘working’ loosely as both Ubuntu and Android are buggy, but the foundations are certainly in place. As you might expect, much of the work is documented over at XDA-Developers. If you feel as though you know your way around the Android porting steps, check out this site for links and builds aimed at advanced users. Alternatively, if you prefer to wait till something a little more user friendly is released, just check out the video after the jump!

Pantech Android A630K

According to ZDNet Korea, the Pantech A630K is launching in Korea via KT with Android 2.1 within the next month. The device is alleged to be aimed towards women, and here are the points made on the Korea speaking website. The phone itself fits into smaller hands very well and the ‘crystal’ bevel on the bottom of the device can light up like jewelry with seven shade of color.

The device also offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth T-DMB TV tuner and there seems to be mention of multi-touch on the ZDNet Korean website. Further specifications are as follows;

HTC announce Android 2.1 for GSM Hero, June 4th

by: James TromansJune 4, 2010

GSM Hero Android 2.1

The word is out. The Android 2.1 update for the GSM variant of the HTC Hero will start hitting handsets some time today, June 4th. If you have had a CDMA version then you may have had the Android 2.1 update sometime over the last month providing you live in the US. This would include the Droid Eris and Sprint Hero devices.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is little known regarding the release of Android 2.1 for the Hero within Europe. Indeed, at the moment this progress is limited to the Western side of the pond. We’ll certainly keep a eye on what’s going on here. If the update were to hit Europe it would go [...]

Motorola Shadow Has Android 2.1 with ‘NinjaBlur’

by: James TromansJune 2, 2010

Motorola Shadow via Gizmodo

A hot thread over at Howard Forums has revealed that the Motorola Shadow is running Android 2.1. Furthermore, the Shadow is said to outperform the Samsung Galaxy S, which is no mean feat. According to bill23, a Howard Forum Shadow evangelist, “Its not on froyo.” Enough said. When asked how the Motorola Blur is integrated into the Shadow, bill23 had the following to say;

I move silent like a “Ninja” and strike in a” Blur” of speed. Ninja Blur is Blur running without the user knowing. For those who don’t like Blur.

The literal translation of this rather cryptic comment is that Blur can be hidden for those that [...]

Sony Ericsson X10 to get Android 2.1 in Q4 2010

by: James TromansMay 6, 2010

Sony Ericsson X10

Sony Ericsson did indeed make us wait a long time before bringing the X10 to market after its original announcement. Even then, they were a little behind schedule. When the phone did arrive, it came with Android 1.6. There were hopes and dreams that the long road to market might have been so due to the fact that the device was going to secretly ship with Android 2.0. Alas, this was not to be the case.

However, there is word that the X10 family of devices (including the X10 mini), will update to Android 2.1 in Q4 of this year. By my reconning that means December 2010, just as Android 2.6 comes out, or something.

I like [...]

Video: Android 2.1 for G1 and MyTouch 3G, thanks Cyanogen

by: James TromansApril 29, 2010

Cyanogen Android 2.1 on G1

In short, soon you shall have Android 2.1 on your G1 and MyTouch 3G. Good times. Sure, it not an official release, but let’s live a little. According to the Twitter updates, we can expect to see this thing become publicly available this evening. If we’re being totally honest with you, it is possible you have had Android 2.1 on your G1 for a while now, but chances are the video cam didn’t work and the landscape gallery was a little funky.

With the new build from Cyanogen, no such problems should arise. As usual you will have to ‘root’ your device, but if you were keen enough to be an early [...]

Privately held computer manufacturer Velocity Micro is entering the tablet business with a new selection of touchscreen computers known as the Cruz. Velocity Micro specialize in custom high-end computers, and the Cruz will come in a 4 x 3 and 16 x 9 configurations sometime in the next few months (late summer). We can expect a 7-inch capacitive multitouch display with a processor clocking in around the 800MHz mark.
