Call us skeptical

As far as rumors go, this appears to be among the weakest of the weak.  An “anonymous tipster” has told the guys at CellphoneSignal that the T-Mobile G2 is going to be launched next month.  If you ask me, this seems more than a bit too soon after the G1 launch to make sense for T-Mobile, though the G2 name is something we have been expecting all along, so anybody with pair of neurons still firing could have come up with that one.

Some of the highlights from G2′s probably imaginary spec sheet include:

  • 3G
  • Full touch Screen
  • Enterprise support
  • WiFi
  • 5mp camera with autofocus and flash
  • Memory card Slot
  • Mobile Backup

  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • Sync with PC
  • Task list
  • Video capture and playback
  • Video Messaging
  • Voice Dialing
  • myFaves and web2go capable

In reality, this just looks like a combination of the features mentioned recently in the Cupcake update and a few obvious “it should have had this” type additions.

Update: Boy Genius Report has received its own tip that says this G2 story is a load of hogwash, which we’ve said from the start appears likely.  This tip claims that there is a G2, which we always knew, and that it will appear in April.  That’s far easier to believe.

My friend works for T-Mobile as a CS supervisor and told me something like this isn’t impossible, but they haven’t been made aware of it, or heard rumors internally.

She also said that the G1 is setting all kinds of records for returns. She said the number for multiple returns per customer are at levels previously unheard of, or even thought possible. Apparently, tons of customers kept returning them in hopes of getting a later-generation better-built G1. Lots of peeps unhappy with the build quality.

A good percentage eventually wound up keeping one of the G1′s shipped, but significant numbers did not. The general feeling at T-Mobile is they’re very happy with Android, but not necessarily the G1…

Yeah, I think the firmware update issues artificially increased returns due to people “fishing” for the “right” version. Some wanted newer firmware, others (for hacking purposes) wanted older versions.

The build quality on the device seemed fine to me, but who’s to say?

You’re one of the lucky ones then. I went through 3 of them before finally refusing shipment on the 4th. The wobbly screen, a couple creaked really bad >and< had the loose screens. Definitely not the device to extend a contract 2 years for.
