An extension of the usual IP-based chatting service, stickers have grown in popularity among mobile users, especially with the rise of cross-platform apps like LINE and Viber and even Facebook Messenger. Google’s own Hangouts service was actually late in the game, only introducing stickers in late February this year in its iOS release.
Even with stickers support on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, Hangouts for Android, and even on desktop, are still lacking in this department. Users could only send the usual emoticons and smileys, but not the bigger, more interesting, stickers. An app, Stickers for Hangouts, addresses this deficiency by providing a means for Android users to include these cute images in Hangouts chats.
Stickers for Hangouts essentially enables users to choose from a pre-set collection of stickers and send these as an image to the recipient — something similar to how other apps actually send stickers to their cross-platform recipients. The app is a free download on Google Play and is supported by ads.
The app also works in conjunction with an Xposed module, for those who have rooted phones running the Xposed Framework. This adds an “Add Sticker” option to the attachment menu on Hangouts, which gives easier access to the sticker collection. This means you don’t have to manually select “Pick a Sticker” as the app for choosing an image to attach. This requires that you have the latest version of Hangouts and the Xposed Framework, though.
And if you’re worried that your recipient might not have the same app, fret not. Recipients will see the stickers whether they’re on Android, iOS or desktop, since the stickers are sent as attached images.
Not everyone is too hot on stickers, however. But for those who feel that stickers add personality to their chats, then this would be a great addition to Hangouts on Android.
