If a new rumor is to be believed, Sony may be working on another Xperia Z variant, the Sony Xperia ZR.

The latest rumor comes courtesy of the Xperia Blog, which simply states that they have it on “good authority” that the Xperia ZR is in the works. So what can we expect from the ZR? Allegedly, the handset will borrow from the looks of the Xperia ZL, but will feature water resistance like the the Xperia Z, with a rating of IP55/IP58.

Probably the biggest change from its Xperia Z brethren is that the Xperia ZR will ditch the 1080p 5-inch display in favor of a smaller 4.6-inch 720p display. The rest of the specs include a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, a 13MP Exmor cam, 8GB storage, microSD and a 2300mAh battery.

Keep in mind that this is purely a rumor, and shouldn’t be taken too seriously until Sony confirms that the Xperia ZR is really in the cards. That said, with Sony’s tendency to create multiple phones under the same lettering name (Xperia T, TL, TX – for example), this certainly doesn’t seem too unbelievable.

What do you think, would you be interested in a smaller-screen Xperia Z or not?
