The Sony Xperia Z is running away with all the media attention, but its sibling, the Xperia ZL, is no slouch by any means. The major differences between in the Sony Xperia ZL and the Xperia Z are in the design and form factor, with the former being more compact but thicker than the latter.
Considering the fact that the hardware of both devices is identical, the major differences between the Sony Xperia ZL and the Xperia Z are purely superficial, with the former featuring a rubbery material on the back, as opposed to the tempered glass finish of the latter. Another key difference, if you’re someone who loses their smartphones often to water and dust (or ink) damage, is that the Xperia ZL is not water or dust resistant. You can check out our Xperia Z vs Xperia ZL in-depth comparison here.
But I’m sure it’ll eventually all come down to price, and unless you’re absolutely in need of a waterproof device or can’t live without the glass back or larger size of the Xperia Z, the Xperia ZL will be the better bet, since it’ll be cheaper. And while that may the case, it doesn’t mean that the Xperia ZL comes that cheap! The handset will launch in Germany in April, and will be priced at a €599.99 (~$806).
I’m not sure what Sony’s plan is by releasing two very similar high-end devices and whether they’re intended for different markets or not (although reports indicate both devices being released in some countries). We’ll have to wait and see how the Xperia Z is priced for a fair comparison, but if it’s only hardware that you’re keen about, the Sony Xperia ZL may in fact be the better choice.
What are your thoughts? We all know the Xperia ZL and Xperia Z are amazing handsets, but what do you think about the price point? Would you consider buying the Xperia ZL, or rather go for the other?
