Update, May 5: Marshmallow is hitting the Sony Xperia Z2, Z3, and Z3 Compact in Canada, across multiple carriers. Check your phone for notifications!

Original post, May 4: Despite the rather unfortunate situation saddling Sony’s smartphone segment, the Japanese OEM has been sufficiently satisfying regarding makes of Marshmallow. After making beta builds available to a number of its handsets – including those from yesteryear – it’s now in the process of rolling out official builds.

India is the latest country to receive the new OS build, with several different models all eligible for update. Included are the Xperia Z2, the Xperia Z3, the Xperia Z3 Compact, and the Xperia Z2 Tablet.

Android Marshmallow 6.0 adds a number of new features to the phones, including Doze which seeks to reduce power consumption while the device is not in use, Now On Tap which scans the screen for any relevant links and details to provide contextual abilities, and granular App Permissions that allows the user to have more control over just what aspects of their device apps have access to.

In addition, Sony has included Xperia Messaging, a fun way where users can include Stickers with their messaging, and Direct Share.

While the updates are rolling out now, as with any OTA situation, it may take several days – or weeks – for it to hit your device. One option, however, is to manually hit the “Check for Updates” tab, located by navigating to the Settings menu, then down to About Device.

Perhaps for the Xperia Z2 handset in particular, it is impressive that Sony is still committed to caring about it almost 2 years after its original release.
