After a fair share of rumors and speculation, Sony has finally taken the wraps off of the Sony Xperia Z2 at its MWC 2014 press conference.

Although the Sony Xperia Z2 looks fairly reminiscent of its predecessor, both the improved software and hardware features make the Xperia Z2 a major leap forward from the Z1.

    Specs and hardware features

The Sony Xperia Z1 is already more than capable of delivering a solid Android experience, but the Z2 takes this up a notch further by introducing a Snapdragon 801 CPU and bumping the RAM up to 3GB. While we still don’t have specifics on memory or device dimensions, here’s the Sony Xperia Z2’s specs, based on what we currently know about the handset:

    • 5.2-inch Full HD Live Color LED display (1920 x 1080) with TRILUMINOS and X-Reality technology
    • 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU
    • 3GB of RAM
    • 20.7MP 1/2.3-type EXMOR RS CMOS with G Lens, CMOS image, BIONZ  for mobile
    • 4K video capture (3840×2160 pixels/30p) with SteadyShot image stabiliization
    • Digital noise-cancelling technology for an immersive audio experience
    • 3200 mAh battery
    • IP55/IP58 rating – waterproof and dustproof
    • 4G LTE support
    • Android 4.4 KitKat with Sony features on top
    • 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2mm) and weighs 163 grams
    • Colors: Black, purple, white

As you may have noticed in the spec list, the Sony Xperia Z2 features noise cancellation technology, alongside stereo speaker sound quality. Sony says that their noise technology can help reduce up to 98% of ambient noise when used with their compact in-ear MDR NC31EM Noise Cancelling Headset.

Aside from the addition of digital noise cancelling and the upgraded CPU/RAM/display size, it appears that the camera is one of the biggest focuses for the Xperia Z2, just like its predecessor. The camera remains at 20.7MP, but it now offers 4K video capture technology and a few other camera hardware improvements. There’s also several new software features designed to provide the best photo-taking experience possible.

    Software features

In addition to camera features seen with the Xperia Z1 like Info-Eye and Timeshift burst, the Z2 introduces several new features, including a new Movie Creator that allows you to trim and crop your videos so that you can easily pick out what you want to share.

Here’s some of the new camera features you can expect from the Z2:

    • Timeshift video: To relive every moment of the action in slow motion detail, the new Timeshift video mode lets you shoot in 120 frames per second and select scenes to slow the playback speed for dramatic slow motion effects exactly where you want, even underwater.
    • Creative effect: Use a range of new creative effects for your photos and videos. Available in real-time for video, these adjustments enhance your clips with a range of effects such as colours, image trails, mirror and motion effects.
    • Background defocus: This new camera app simulates a shallow depth of field. Capture two photos at different focus settings and blend together the different depths, leading to a blurred out background for more professional looking photos.
    • AR effect: Now available for video recording, have some fun with your photos and videos with new augmented reality animations, including sound effects for video.
    • Vine: Create short, beautiful, looping videos in a simple and fun way for your friends and family to see – all from your camera’s viewfinder. Plus, using the dedicated camera button, you can capture Vine videos underwater as well.

Still not enough camera features for you? Aside from the many pre-loaded apps, you can install even more optional apps by going to your viewfinder, tapping the camera mode icon and choosing “+Apps”. From their you’ll be taken to Sony Select, where you’ll be presented with more choices.

Although a lot of the Xperia Z2’s new software is focused around the camera, Sony notes that many of its existing apps are also receiving UI changes and other minor improvements. Additionally, the Xperia Z2 includes several special offers out of the box, such as six free movies from Sony Pictures and a 30 day free trial of Music Unlimited.

    Expected availability

Sony has yet to reveal a specific release date for the Xperia Z2, though it is expected to arrive globally from March onward. No word has been given on pricing either, though we imagine it will likely follow similar pricing to the Xperia Z1, so we speculate somewhere around the $600 – $650 mark at launch. What do you think of the Sony Xperia Z2, impressed or not?

      Z2 rocks!

    • Øyvind

Seams like a great product, but I can’t help feeling that the bezels are too wide for a 2014 flagship phone…

      • Opinion

side bezel are smaller IMO,but the larger bezel for up and down is due to dual front stereo speaker, like in htc one, just sony design it better make it invisible from your view

      • Ogee

Bezels r better than on the Z1 and the reason it’s wider than the LG G2 or other phones is cause of the water proof body and large battery. Trust me if lg make a real water proof phone not like the (Samsung S5 that’s water resistant still with larger bezels cause of it) it would have equally wide if not wider bezels. It is a price one has to accept unless you don’t want a water proof phone then you know your options. Even Sony has several phones with far smaller bezels not water proof. The Xperia Zl n Zr come to mind here.

    • renz

      Why not using snapdragon 805?

      • Xajel

It’s not ready for March release, the 805 will be seen in devices starting from May

    • http://discoverxperiav.blogspot.com roshan

good fone to upgrade from note 3

pros: waterproof, 20mpx camera, noise cancelling and 4k video

      • shy

cons : slow software update for all sony’s product.

        thats all,.

        • Nebsif

And a million years old design

          • shy

i beg to disagree, sony has the best design for smartphone.. and anotther con, big big battery problem

            • WiZe

Can’t understand all your issues about battery.. On my Z1, after a full day of usage (it’s 10pm here) I’m still at 43%, best battery on a smartphone ever for me

            • Jesus

It’s all about how you use it.

            • Jesus

Just looks like a big iPhone 4..

            • kg2128

nope HTC has the best design, that’s just a fact.

          • kg2128

yup, love the specs/features but the design is mediocre, and the bezel is gigantic. A huge bezel is a lose lose (looks ugly, bigger in the pocket).

      • MadCowOnAStick

the note 3 was released less than half a year ago -.-

    • Balraj

      Nice phone but not exciting…
Does it come with sd card?

    • shy

hey sony! LG, HTC, Samsung already sent out their 4.4 update. what now? leave behind??

      • Gutt Grinder

I think you’re on the wrong place dude, go away!!..

        Anyway about the Z2…

I wish Sony will release a mini or compact version of this device, since 5″ phones are not my type. I really do love the specs for this since I’m a Sony Xperia V user and getting this type of phone will be a major update.

I’ll wait for the mini/compact version and I hope it will allow me to remove or replace the batteries just like the Xperia V and ZR.. :)

        • Jordan Guillot

Honestly, the Z1 Compact is the same as this, although it has 2 GB of RAM instead of 3. It has a 4.3 inch screen, and it seems to fit your description. Just a suggestion.

    • Blowntoaster

looks like a slightly tweaked version of the brilliant Z1. Hope the screen is better, as with the Z1 Compact.
Now they should do a GPE edition of this phone.

      • MasterMuffin

        The bezels seem smaller!

        • Adam Koueider

          DAT Front Facing speakers doe!

      • Tjaldid

the screen is much better judging by previews.

      • Shark Bait

Exactly what they should have done, refined a solid release.
Guess the HTC one 2 will be similar

        • Don Nicolai Salonga

          Sony….. Still better than Samsung…..

          • Shark Bait

            Agreed

      • AndroidBoss

        Also, hopefully no glossy back.

Edit: Software looks the same exact thing.

      • Castor

the z1 should have not existed. i think they were just testing the waters with it. OR they found the Z1 name ugly or awkward so they had to release a device that can bear it and assign the z2 name to the better version.

it’s like the galaxy s range. there is no galaxy s1. it’s just s and then s2. same thing with apple.

    • Jaun Lombard

Well at least the Z & Z1 owners can say the have a Z2 becaus they all look the same!

isn’t this the 3rd Sony in 1.5 years? If I bought a Z1 I will be bleak and mad as hell!!

      • Adam Koueider

I bought the Z1, I’m not mad. This kind of stuff happens in the fast moving tech world. I’m not updating to it, but those with the Xperia Z, might find it a worthy upgrade.

Also, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the design of the Z series other than the big-ish bezels. Why reinvent the wheel if the wheel functions perfectly already?

        • Castor

pls sell your z1 and get the z2. i want to hear your review of it :) u seem fair with your assessments.

          • Adam Koueider

Unfortunately, I have several family members expecting me to hand down my Z1 to them once I get a new phone, so I don’t sell my phones. I don’t think I’ll be getting the Z2, but if I do, I’ll be sure to do my obligatory “X Months with the Xperia Z2″ like I did with the Z1 so you can get the idea of living with the device for an extended period of time and actually living with it rather than the limited use time of most reviews. If not, I’m sure we will be reviewing it as soon as possible, just not me :)

    • Harshit Khanna

If Sony solves the aging UI and slow Update issue… We could have a winner right here. An amazing spec sheet for an amazing phone

    • harrold

      BIONZ not Boinz ;)

    • jahanzeb aamir

Still too wide bezels … It’s 2014, Well I guess few more year before we get to see edge to edge screen from any of the brands. and That’s when I’ll switch.

      • MSmith79

The G2 has really small bezels. Don’t see why others can’t pull it off if LG can.

        • JZ Aamir

Agreed! Now after watching S5 event … I say Z2 is still the better looking so far. Samsung screwed up BIG time :)

          • MSmith79

Yeah I agree. They definitely screwed up. Although, I think both Samsung and Sony could have done better. Neither one really excites me. I’m glad Z2 has 3GB of ram instead of 2, but so far I think I might be just getting an LG G2 instead.

            • Castor

and it’s cheaper. you can get a waterproof case if you like waterproofing.

          • WiZe

Glad I moved to Sony XPERIA Z1. The build quality, camera and especially the battery life and easy connectivity with tons of accessories trough NFC makes a definitive winner! My next phone? The XPERIA Z2 (Not a hater, I got GS2, 3, 4 and Note 2, 3)

        • Castor

because it’s not waterproof. waterproof phones use a bulkier antenna. look at the s5. after samsung decided to do a waterproof, they can no longer keep the same proportions of the note 3 and s4.

        • O Gee

Cause the G2 isn’t water proof, look at the S4 slim bezels almost like the G2 but as soon as they made it water resistant like the Z, Z1 the S5 got far larger bezels. U need to know which phone best suits you, if you want a water proof phone u ve to live with the bezels and front stereo speakers in the Z2. If slim bezels is your thing forget water proof phones.

    • Zeshan Ahmed

      give me that……

    • najiy91

xperia z2 is the king of the titans!great change for led display,i knew sony has the technology.by the way for all big bezel haters, big bezels are important for phone protection and bigger battery can be inserted.proof-s4,note 3 and lg g2 lose to xperia z1 in android authority fall test.long live sony!!!

    • John-Phillip Saayman

This is a pretty good phone. The s5 will have to impress

      • Justin Rebar

This phone just beat the S5 in my opinion

        • John-Phillip Saayman

Yeah now it comes down to brand loyalty

    • AussieGreek

If there’s no speaker at bottom why is there such a huge bezel?

      • harrold

because there is a speaker at the bottom ._.

    • Al-Mothafar M. Al-Hasan

I have Z1 now and I don’t see big difference between Z2 and Z1, and specially I’m really satisfied with it.

    • Jayfeather787

      Nice specs.

    • Peter Blanco

4G LTE Support? Could this mean… No way. There is no way this means Verizon will get this phone. It must be other bands.

      • MSmith79

        Agree…other bands.

        • Mikey Styles

It supports both VZW LTE bands available. CDMA……well that’s obviously the issue since it only supports GSM for everything else lol. Smh @ you VZW

    • Flip Jumpman

      Nice phone. Not too shabby…

    • rockky

Safe to say the Ultra will adopt these features?

    • MSmith79

Hope the display is better than the Z. I went into T-Mo thinking I was gonna buy the Z on it’s launch day. The viewing angles were so bad that you could looking at it straight on and just tilt up ever so slightly and the screen would start to get washed out. I walked home empty handed

      • O Gee

This has the best screen I have seen on a mobile phone to date, the new live led tech makes.it look better than the S5 from the comparison videos I have seen. Perfect viewing Angles cause it’s an Ips screen and not tft like on the Z n Z1. I own the Z and while I’ll agree the viewing angles get a bit washed out when tilted especially with light colours but it has been improved with several updates. I ve compared my Z directly with Samsung S4 and I’ll say the so called difference is marginal with the viewing angles. But looking at head on the S4 in no way has an advantage. Go read up on the Z1 Compact review and see this viewing angle problem doesn’t exist anymore. And this Z2 has a better screen than the compact. U can’t go wrong with this phone. The best out now by a mile and lg won’t do anything to better it later this year.

    • Justin Rebar

      I want it now!

    • beboo

it’s not a huge update from the Z1 almost the same
if any one has Z1 you should wait for Z3 :D

    • ComeBackSteveJobs

Everything the GS5 should have been. Am I the only one dissapointed with the GS5?

    • turboguy

      The galaxy s5′s got a hands-on video,and comparison videos,but why don’t I see any of them for xperia z2

      • Adam Koueider

        It’s coming later today! Z2, M2 and Z2 Tablet!

    • sisore

Outdated UI? Might be so, but it was practical and still easy to use. As a side note, Sony-baked Android Kitkat 4.4 bring tons of new features if I am not mistaken, so let’s see how this Z2 will fare

    • Ruz

Very impressed with the phone but still there is a lot of space for improvement. I shall wait for LG, Oppo & Motorolla offerings

    • Sammy Jasper

Does Z2 come with FM radio? and count of pixel density(PPI)?

      • Adam Koueider

Z1 came with FM Radio, I hope this one does too. 424 PPI.

    • Surfiz Compiz

This one looks fantastic , I might just consider getting this

    • Spleen52

      deff considering this one! http://tinyurl.com/nkq6nll
