Sony is pretty hot on the software updates, even for its previous generation devices. The company has already started rolling out its Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Xperia Z1 compact.

There doesn’t appear to be a changelog to accompany the update just yet, then again Android 4.4.4 doesn’t bring any sweeping changes or new features. However, it does contain an important security patch for an OpenSSL bug, which would have allowed for a “man-in-the-middle” attack.

The build number, 14.A.0.108, has currently appeared in Russia, India, and Indonesia, and should be heading out to other regions in the very near future. The same build version has also been spotted at the PTCRB, a certification review board for mobile devices, for use with the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra, which suggests that Android 4.4.4 should start rolling out for these devices shortly.

The update should arrive in its own time OTA, or you can force a manual check by heading over to Settings > About phone > Software updates > System updates.

Let us know when you get it.

4.4.4, and the Xperia Z1s is STILL on Jelly Bean. This is the last time I ever buy a carrier branded phone. Damn you T-Mobile!

Sony products look nice but the durability is a serious concern.
My Ultra Z was a perfect phone except the camera broke down within 1st week and many other people including me suffers from “black screen of death” problem. Oh and what about the super sensitive screen that will stop working if you breath on it-seriously.

It’s not xperia but even Sony Vaio laptops have poor durability. I recently bought Fit 15A and out of the box the LCD was bruised with white splotches. The hinge mechanic reminds me of my Sony walkman hinge for Memory stick card slot which was both overly complicated and broke easily.

Also, I used work part time at ComputerCare Australia and one of my colleagues worked at a job organizing company phones. He decided to go Xperia Z and T line for company phones as they had good features, specs, and pricing. He had numerous problems with the hardware issues.

YES, finally the update fixed my sound issue it was cranking and lagging and now it is OK…..

  • XperiaPriest

To all the people experiencing problems on 4.4.2 on the Z – Reboot on safe mode, everythings back to normal afterwards, no lag and normal battery!

  • Yuga Max

    WHERE IS MY Z???

  • Daniel Coetzee

I never got it. Local customer service not being much help. They say its a local issue, but sounds more like a delay tactic. Didn’t have the best experience with Sony compared to my Samsung. Will not be taking Sony again. Anyone know if I can manually update this somehow?
