Sony Xperia Tablet S

You know how Mondays are usually pretty slow news days in this little technology world of ours? Well, not today. And we mostly have Sony to thank for that.

The Xperia ZL phone has just gone up for pre-order in the US, the Xperia Tablet Z has been priced in 13 European countries and now we have something to report about the Xperia Tablet S as well. You remember the Tab S, right? The 9.4-incher that preceded the Z in the fall of 2012.

As good as it looked on paper six months ago, the Xperia Tablet S proved to be a pretty massive flop. Not only were sales halted soon after the release due to water damage (technically, the slate was splash proof), but there were also numerous software glitches that crippled the user experience.

Even now there are many users that complain about random reboots and unstable network connections, but fear not, as Sony will finally come to your rescue in a month or so. The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update will be rolled out either in late April or early May and with it there should be plenty of bug fixes to go around.

Given the tab is still running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, the upgrade should bring plenty of other goodies, including Project Butter performance enhancements and Google Now integration. Oddly though, the JB bump’s announcement, posted on the Sony Support Community page, is no longer available, which is anything but a good sign.

The message initially referred to the first-gen Tablet S too, released in 2011 and currently running ICS. Sony has no plans to roll out Jelly Bean for that thing, although the company didn’t rule out the upgrade coming at some point in the future.

    …April or May?

I should have bought an iPad, seriously. I’m done with Android after my contract is up.
