Video: Sony QX Lenses — how they work!

Sony QX Lens

The Sony QX lenses are easily the coolest smartphone accessory to come out at IFA, and ones we’ve been anticipating for quite some time. The ability to have your current phone suddenly turn into a really nice point-and-shoot is a real boon for serious mobile photographers.

How do they work? Are the pictures you get from either any good? Our Josh Vergara is at IFA, and he tests the QX100 for us. From pairing to shooting, the Sony QX lenses are real dynamos, and the pictures it gives you are pretty phenomenal.

They pair by NFC, which is available on most modern smartphones. Both lenses have a micro SD Card slot, so you don’t need to worry about running out of space on your phone for photos. The frame you use to bolster it to your device is adjustable, but the lenses can work without them — just point and shoot, even at yourself!

The manual controls will sooth the worried minds of serious photogs, and the ease of use and pairing will definitely satiate the more casual shooter. Check out the video below, and let us know what you think!

this is a pretty good idea. neither is it as bulky as the phone mated to a camera (samsung), nor does it lack a physical/ optical zoom like 1020, the lens by itself is pretty handy and easy to carry. AND… the biggest benefit, it might have compatibility soon to plenty of phones. it’s a win win situation !

I think Sony could be on a winner with this idea too. The lens costing around 250 dollars could prove very popular.

I see many people saying it’s kinda strange/weird or whatever, but I actually think it’s a great idea.

Is it me, or does the zoom button location seems a little awkward, Surely on the top/bottom would be much easier? And a non-sweat gel grip / stra[ of sorts to use it when not attached to the phone must be in the works – thinking hassleblad hip viewfinder mode

How about the deals in Europe: Preorder the new Z1 and get a
Smartwatch 2 or the lower QX10 lens FREE. Too bad these deals are never
in the US for Sony. Since you probably wouldn’t need the lens for the Z1 (packing a serious 20.7 MP already), you can use the lens for another phone or for vacations, etc.
