Thought the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the upcoming 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate were giants? Now a new rumor suggests that Sony might be taking things even further with a 6.44-inch phablet of their own.

The new rumor comes from the photo directly below, which was first published to the Chinese Digi-Wo forum by someone claiming it is a component for a massive 6.44-inch, 1080p Sony smartphone. As you can see from the picture, the bezel is very skinny even when compared to the Ascend Mate but otherwise their isn't much to learn just from looking at this panel.

Keep in mind that a single picture of a glass panel is far from proof that Sony is really working on such a massive phablet. This could be just as easily be nothing more than a prototype that will never see the light or day, or for that matter it could be a faked image.

One thing we can't deny is that bigger seems to be better right now in the smartphone world, and so a phablet that flirts so closely with the boundaries of phablet and 7-inch tablet certainly isn't inconceivable at this point.

What do you think, could this be a glass panel for a future member of the Xperia family? Would you ever consider a 6.44-inch smartphone or do you think such a size just isn't practical?

I say 5.5″ is good enough.

I see a time when a 7 inch tablet (the sweet spot) will have cellphone capability and with Bluetooth headsets, why not? Nobody has to put their phone up to their ear anymore…Just like carrying your old Daytimers with a lot more capability, Internet, PIM, email, sms, camera, word processor, GPS, TV, movies and cloud storage…

I like your thinking, you see the bigger picture (no pun intended)

Wanted that for years! I hardly use my phone to call people. I’m even happy attaching headphones with a mic to make the random call.

A 7″ phablet / tablet that makes calls, video, GPS etc…? Already been out for a while… Samsung Tab GT-P1000. Just annoying updates stopped at Gingerbread.
