Several weeks ago, a leak surfaced from a leaked Samsung user manual that brought visual evidence of a new addition the Korean company would be adding to some smartphones. Referred to as “Smart Glow”, the feature is essentially a squared, circled-shaped LED embedded around a rear camera module that will for immediate visualization of notifications even when a phone is face down. It was speculated that the first device to include said feature would be the upcoming Galaxy J2 (2016) handset. Indeed a picture leak has been procured today, which seemingly confirms both:

Rainbow bright, what do we have here but an LED light!

As can be seen in the above image, the LED ring is actually quite thick in terms of its width. As for its specific purposes, as we had stated in our original post:

Users will be able to customize Smart Glow by assigning specific colors to certain contacts or applications, so they are aware of new notifications even when the phone is lying face down. The light ring will also light up when the battery is low and it will work as a guide when taking selfies with the rear camera by turning blue when the user’s face is in the field of view.

In addition to the close-up, three additional images of the J2 have surfaced:

Of particular note is the unique-looking series of lines that pass through the Samsung logo on the back side. They can also be seen on the side, extending to the volume rocker, however do not appear to physically stick out. At the very least it gives the product a different look than its siblings.

The leak of which this post doth speak.

The presence of Smart Glow itself is of particularly interesting consideration, for two reasons:

  1. Lower-end Galaxy smartphones often lack front-facing notification LEDs, and thus this might be a solution to the problem.
  2. The feature’s debut is in the J2, which will be a typical plastic product presumably with a removable back.

The question, then: Will more premium Samsung products also begin to ship with Smart Glow in the future? This weekend’s Note 7 leak showed no presence whatsoever. Would this be something that the Galaxy S8 might have? Would people think it tacky or distracting, or would it be a welcomed addition? Leave your thoughts below!
