Could ‘Odyssey’ be Samsung’s stand-alone VR headset?

Samsung announced back in April that they were working on a stand-alone VR headset, but we hadn't heard much about it since. That is, until now.

Well, well, well. What do we have here? It seems that some legal branding paperwork has surfaced that would seem to indicate that Samsung is working on a product they’re calling Odyssey. Based on accompanying an accompanying VR logo and a main icon that looks a bit like a VR headset if you squint, it might just be the case that this is Samsung’s stand-alone VR headset.

We first caught wind of such a device a few months ago when Samsung announced that they had a stand-alone VR headset in the works. This tease came from the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco this past April, and the company’s head of R&D described their vision as a line of “wireless and dedicated VR devices, not necessarily working with our mobile phones.” No timeline for the launch of these devices was provided, but these Korean trademark registrations offer some compelling evidence that we’re drawing closer to such a date.

The “designated goods” descriptions for these registrations include “headsets for use with computers,” “computer featuring interactive video games of virtual reality,” “virtual reality game software,” and “virtual reality game headsets.” So while there’s no official word from Samsung yet, this evidence looks pretty strong. Still, best to play it safe until we get the formal announcement.
