Update (8/8): The day has finally arrived: you can finally pre-order the Galaxy S8 Active from AT&T. The device is available in Meteor Gray and Tungsten Gold color options and will set you back $28.34 per month with a 30-month installment agreement. Alternatively, you can buy the S8 Active outright for $849.99.

AT&T has a couple nice promotions for customers, too. If you buy a Galaxy S8 Active, you'll get one free if you buy both on AT&T Next with monthly eligible wireless and DIRECTV service. AT&T will also knock $500 off a Samsung TV if you switch to DIRECTV and buy a Galaxy S8 Active on AT&T Next. Offer details can be found here.

After a number of leaks, and a possibly accidental confirmation by AT&T last week, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is now official. Samsung announced the device in a press release that we received via email earlier today, confirming the previously unknown price and release date details.

The Galaxy S8 Active will go up for pre-order from tomorrow, August 8, before it sees an official availability at AT&T stores across the US from August 11. It’s coming in Meteor Gray or Titanium Gold and will set you back $28.34 for 30 months on AT&T Next, adding up to a total of around $850 — the same as a Galaxy S8 Plus.

The unit is also eligible for up to $200 in credit when you trade in an eligible smartphone, and can save you money on the purchase of a Gear S2, Gear S3, Samsung TV or another Samsung phone when you make a purchase (more details on those offers will be available in store or at the link at the bottom from tomorrow).

As had been previously rumored, the Galaxy S8 Active arrives with largely the same specs as the regular Galaxy S8, with a few notable differences; namely, the inclusion of a 4,000 mAh battery (compared to 3,000 mAh), and a more durable design, and the lack of the Infinity Display tech housed on the S8 and S8 Plus.

The S8 Active is shatter-resistant, dust and water resistant (surviving under 1.5 meters of water for a period of 30 minutes) and built from military-grade materials. The “metal frame and bumper […] protect against shock, abrasion, tilting or twisting,” wrote Samsung in the press release, while the rear is also said to be “tough” and provide for a secure grip.

What’s more, the device meets the MIL-STD-810G military specification, which, according to Samsung, means it has been tested against a “subset of 21 specific environmental conditions, including temperature, dust, shock/vibration, and low pressure/high altitude,” to guarantee its heavy duty design (though Samsung notes that the unit may not perform correctly during exposure to extreme conditions).

Rounding things off, the S8 Active is also a “5G Evolution capable” device, offering access to 5G network coverage in a few specific areas — but it’s a minor deal, really.
