Samsung has been all about covering all bases and attacking every possible niche lately, but things are to get even more crowded soon. And if you reckoned the idea of a high-end clamshell device was crazy, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on a 5-inch dual-SIM mid-range “phablet”.

The Galaxy Grand Duos, aka GT-I8092, is rumored to get an unveiling in January (probably at CES), though it’s unclear whether there could be real demand for a phone of this kind or if we’re heading to another S3 Mini-like flop.

The spec sheet is still somewhat mysterious, but considering that codename, this will probably simply be a dual-SIM version of the recently leaked Galaxy Grand (aka Baffin, aka SHV-E270S, aka SHV-E270K). That would mean both this phone and its “brother” are to come with a quad-core 1.4 GHz Exynos CPU, Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, 2,100 mAh battery, NFC, LTE and… 5-inch LCD screen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution.

Why would Samsung want to pack so much heat onto the Grand and Grand Duos and then mess it all up with a ginormous, but poor LCD display is still beyond us, which is why we’re still hoping that rumored resolution is a hoax. We wouldn’t shed a lot of tears if the Grand/Grand Duos duo’s existence were to be proven phony either, though there’s only a slim chance of that happening.

Anyone excited about the possible coming of a mid-range 5-incher from Samsung? Anyone at all?

I’d like a cheap prepaid 5″ phablet for a senior. Big screen for people with poor vision. The Note 2 is just too expensive, but the right size.

Use common sense people, there’s no way that resolution is correct. This seems more like idiotic rumors again. You guys should know better. This rumor was probably started by Apple to make it seem like Samsung makes crap. In reality they would never put out the junk described above.
