Rumor: Nexus 5 release date set for October 31 (Google Play), November 7-8 (Canada)

October 25, 2013

Nexus 5 press image

Google did not announce new products during its October 24 event, but the company is now rumored to soon launch its next flagship Android smartphone, the Nexus 5.

According to a tip received by MobileSyrup, the Nexus 5 will start selling on October 31 from the Google Play Store, with November 7-8 reportedly being the release date set for various mobile operators from Canada that will apparently launch the device. The carriers list for the handset includes Rogers, Bell, Telus, Koodo and Virgin.

Naturally, we’ll remind you that this is just a rumor, although we will say that this isn’t the first time we hear that October 31 may be the Google Play Store launch date for the Nexus 5.

Furthermore, the same publication posted a supposedly leaked press image for the Telus Nexus 5 not too long ago, with the image (or at least part of it – see below) being confirmed by Google’s Nexus 5 Play Store listing.

Telus Nexus 5

That said, we’ll notice that this has been rather a quiet week for Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat rumors, but we may be looking at the proverbial calm before the storm.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • ladoman

Will this work on Sprint this time?

    • John Bailey

Supposedly it will come packed with the necessary CDMA and LTE bands to do so, according to the FCC listing… I have my fingers crossed that a Sprint variant will be available thru the Play Store and not just thru the carrier themselves

      • Cole Raney

Can you get unlocked phones on a cmda carrier? I know through T-mobile and AT&T you just switch the sim cards.

        • John Bailey

Nope for CDMA phones the ESN number has to be in Sprint or Verizon’s database for it to activate… with an unlocked GSM phone you can just swap SIM cards….also, the Nexus 5 only supports the LTE bands on Verizon, not the CDMA…. but it supports the CDMA and LTE bands for Sprint… :D

          • newsjunkieintl

yet Google is making it totally compatible for Sprint. Maybe playing the long game for next year when it can be used on Sprint pre-paid MNVOs like Ting. Galaxy S3 can be used now, but not current S4. Sprint restricts what the MNVOs can use.

A year from now the Nexus 5 would still be a good phone for pre-paid customers to take to Sprint MNVO, if they wish.

    Monday is the deadline !!!
I wonder what would happen if battery life sucks…
Praying it doesn’t..I badly need a replacement..

    • sluflyer06

Really? The HTC One has the same battery and gets PLENTY of screen-on time, I had one until it got stolen last month, 3.5-4hr was possible depending on use.

      • Balraj

Nexus 4 battery life was very bad
So only less confidence..I want the phoneto last for a full day…
Let’s wait n watch..few more days to go

        • sluflyer06

That’s what I’ve heard but its not exactly a track record of bad battery, I had a Galaxy Nexus before the One and i’d get more than a full day of regular use and light use would get me 2 full days so its not like Nexus phones historically have bad battery life.

          • Cole Raney

The difference is LG made the nexus 4 and likely the nexus 5. So it could be LG sucks with making the hardware be energy efficient.

          • sluflyer06

Apparently you may not have seen the battery tests for the G2, because that thing has insane battery life that kills just about every device out there.

          • Cole Raney

I have not actually. I was going off what I heard about the nexus 4.

  • ladoman

I like you hope it is thru the Play Store. I hate to have to pay the 40.00 activation fee Sprint charges anyway.

  • MelchiahX

Halloween launch or announcement seems very befitting considering Google and nestle working together to name the OS kit Kat. Seems logical too tbh. Here’s hoping :-)

  • taitofu

I understand a company needs to market their product. But these extensions, and wait, and play and extend, irk me. I really wanted this phone, but am personally quite annoyed. Companies that play these over played games, turn me off. It’s like bad customer service, i’d rather give my hard earned hundreds of dollars to another company. Honestly. Just a personal choice. Don’t hate. Kind of reminds me of Blackberry, but they simply just had poor production execution. Took forever to roll our their devices to market.

    • T.J.

Google never announced anything. You’re able with the wrong company.

    • newsjunkieintl

Google has not announced ANYTHING about the Nexus 5, at least officially. All the launch/announce/release rumors are from click bait articles written by idiot bloggers.

All you need to know is Google has NEVER released a Nexus phone before November. Never. Gen 3 and Gen4 were ANNOUNCED in October, but then released it in November. The two before that were released December and January (and yes January comes after November in that 3 month period).

As it’s not November yet… and it’s not past January yet, nothing has been delayed yet.

    • Noel

Statement abt Blackberry kinda true, but Google hasn’t announced anything yet abt the release of the N5 and KitKat. Just keep those $400 in a safe place cuz it will happen any day or a week from now.

  • DarxideGarrison

At first I was amped up waiting for the release, but now I’m just fucking annoyed! Still getting the device though!

    • Marco

Google never announced anything, your fault.

      • Andrew

You know 90% of the leaks were by Google design.
What we have here folks, is Google working us up heavily with foreplay, then leaving the room and not finishing what they started!

And as we all no doubt know, makes us very angry and bitter.

        • systemupdate

most of the leaks is done by people working in the company trying to show off to their friends.

          • joejoe5709

Given that this week has been quiet, I’m leaning toward the theory of coordinated leaks within a marketing schedule.

          • Mike Reid

Statue unveiling photo was intentional or incompetent.

My vote is that it was intentional.

      • NexusKoolaid

First there was the image of the phone at the Kit Kat statue event. Then the phone shows up on Google Play. And apparently no steps were taken from preventing Nexus 5 cases from being offered for sale (I have a Spigen at home now) before an announcement.

Point being: Information about this phone has not been well contained, Google’s fault.

  • devoncatt

Now that the NDA is over is it time to have a KitKat and a Nexus 5 as a Google Halloween treat, not another false release trick?

  • Moosa Mahsoom

KitKat UI elements have a hint of Ubuntu design at some points….. #PersonalOpinion

    • sd

      And

  • Calvin Goff

Okay Google if I don’t see a device by the 31st I’m switching to windows phone. You have officially pissed me off and I want a really great camera anyway.

    • Kevin

I don’t think Google heard you, nor do they care.

    • Brad Clarke

Have fun with that. Make sure you get it on film so you can add it to a FAIL reel on some youtube vid.

    • Ryan N

      One less in line. Sweet.

    • David Kelly

Google hasn’t announced that they are releasing it on the 31st; you are basing you decision on a rumor.

    • David Kelly

Google hasn’t announced that they are releasing it on the 31st; you are basing you decision on a rumor.

    • Andrew

I bet many of us would join you if we didn’t know it was going to be such an awesome phone and were dedicated to the ecosystem.

    • NexusKoolaid

The N5 camera will be good but not as good as the Finnish WPs, so if all you’re after is a good camera just go for a Nokia. Most of us here believe it takes more than a camera to make a great phone so we’ll wait for the N5.

Funny thing is that we have just days, and in the worst case a only week or two to wait. You’ll be waiting a lot longer than that for Microsoft to work out the kinks in their mobile strategy.

      • Calvin Goff

I agree that it takes more than a camera. But what most people don’t realize is that windows phone is a pretty solid platform. Some of the apps aren’t there (a lot actually) but the core features of it work very well.

        • NeedName

You may be correct. . .

          but. . . .

          It’s microsoft!

    • joejoe5709

Jeebus. Patience is a virtue. Despite the leaks, absolutely nothing is official and nothing has been promised to you. Cool your shorts, bucko.

Far away in Mountain View, California, an alarm begins blaring. Concerned engineers get up from their desks. “It’s Calvin Goff,” gasps one employee. “He switched to Windows Phone.” Voices in the room starts to rise in panic. But when Larry Page comes in, everyone goes quiet. No one dares to breathe.

“It’s true,” he says heavily. “It’s all over. We’re ruined. Pack everything up and go home. There’s nothing left for us here.”

Most people start crying. A couple faint. Google’s stock plummets, the company crumbles and about a week later the whole Google complex mysteriously burns to the ground. The end.

  • Xaw2

I say it will be around holloween. It’s named kit Kat and what do people give out on holloween?

    • ryan

  • Brad Clarke

Tragically ugly, good thing it is cheap.

    • sluflyer06

      Just like your face. Burn.

      • Brad Clarke

        Really? lol

        • sluflyer06

          Its a joke, that’s why I said “burn”. ;)

More seriously, how is it ugly? It’s surely not a looker like a HTC One but that doesn’t make it ugly. I think the whole aesthetics of phones these days are pretty meaningless since almost everyone slaps a case on their phone as soon as they get it and pretty much every phone is similar on the face, big sheet of glass with a screen.

You didn’t have to change your avatar.

          • Brad Clarke

The soft touch black back looks OKAY in this stock photo (albeit very cheap and bottom end looking), but browse around some real world shots and it showcases more grease/fingerprint than glossy plastics do.The off center camera looks clunky and the rounded top and bottom add needlessly to the dimensions. I agree about the case thing, but less the front face bit. This phone has massive bezels, yet uses screen real estate for onscreen bezels. I can forgive HTC for its top and bottom gigantic bezels because of the dual front facing speakers… but what is the Nexus’ excuse? the side bezels are also really big… I am talking iPhone big also, in a year where we have seen all bezels on good devices shrink drastically for the better. To my eye, all of this contributes towards a phone which is cheap looking, gets really greasy looking, and has a front face filled with needless bezel… even the “nexus” on the back being oriented the wrong way (for how we regularly hold a phone while in use) detracts from the visual appeal for me. Beauty, is of course in the eye of the beholder, but for me, this is one really fugly phone.

          • Tech First

Huh? the N5 has a smaller body yet larger screen then the N4. Not only that but its going to be one of the smallest 5″ screen phones on the market. What is your baseline for comparison when you say it has massive bezels?

Also your basing the greasy comments on pre-release models so the plastic could easily change. Its naive at best to judge a product before its actually been released.

          • Brad Clarke

Being better than its previous generation has little to do with a comparison to models of THIS generation. Baseline compare new models like the LG G2 and the Galaxy Note 3.

Basing my own personal OPINIONS on the most current data available is perfectly valid, and my opinion can change if the data changes. This entire conversation is based upon only the information available, calling it naive meanwhile participating in conjecture is an exercise in ignorance and/or ineptitude.

          • DFung

Yea, quite disappointed with the big ass bezels. Was hoping for the screen to be 80% of the entire estate, like G2. But Not. Simply nothing stands out for the design of this phone that makes you go ‘Wow, nice!’ like the N4. Not digging the rubbery back either. Like Brad said, what’s up with the ‘NEXUS’ oriented vertically like a tablet…..Makes no sense. And what’s up with the HUGE surrounding around the camera lens?!? I mean I’ve waited for half a year for a phone that looks like this? Overall, a Very Dull Design. Anyhow, everyone is entitled to their opinion on BEAUTY. If it wasn’t for the glossy back of G2 and it’s LG logo on the front, G2 should win the award of best designed smartphone of 2013

          • Brad Clarke

Exactly DF, the glossy polycarbonate is unfortunate but it is a very sharp phone.

At first I thought I didnt like the buttons on the back… but then I saw the WHITE LG G2, and was actually kind of blown away! The screen coverage is stunning to see in person, and can’t be overstated.

The Nexus 5 looks dull, and made questionable choices. I agree about the giant camera surround, looks silly and it is made worse by the fact that it is off center.

  • enuf

ok… will wait for it. but if nothing on the 31st, Moto X.

  • peter

Why is Canada behind ? This is BS. I missed out on the Nexus 4 and like others I am already annoyed at the launch delays of the Nexus 5 !

It’s OBVIOUS Google is behind all the N5 leaks. Oh well, more money to Samsung again.

    • John Smith

canada is behind because it is canada.

      • Brad Clarke

Canada got the Note 3 on the same day as the USA.

    • John

All it said was that the N5 from CARRIERS will be released 1 week later. It should be available on Google Play in Canada on Oct. 31, just like the US. If it isn’t, it would have stated that in the article.

    • Andreas Mikarlsen

The N5 is not delayed when a date is not set or anything

    • DFung

at least you got your news early from Mobile Syrup

  • John

KitKat is a candy bar, when do you get those? Halloween! Trick-or-Treat!

    • NeedName

maybe it’s just another trick :(

    i dont beleve that

  • iTriune

Once again, someone announcing this phone not names Google………

Thank you so much Android Authority team. I was waiting this rumour. Its really great user friendly and smooth.

    • Juan Camilo Giraldo Chaverra

Love the sarcasm, Its really user friendly, Great. Thank you very much “

      • Apu

Thank you and come again :)

  • El Kabong

I don’t get it. What’s the big deal about announcing when the Nex5 will be released?? Just pick a friggin’ date and tell the world.

  • peter

This is why there is no SD card in Nexus 4 & 5.

Micorosoft aparently skims money off every Android device (about $10 each) for infringing pattents, some which include FAT32 !!!
