Rumor: Motorola Nexus smartphone coming in the fourth quarter of the year, not the Moto X

by: Chris SmithAugust 8, 2013

Moto X

A person that was more than accurate with Moto X rumors now says that Motorola will have a Nexus smartphone out by the end of the year, and that it won’t be a Moto X version.

We’re talking about Taylor Wimberly, who shared his Moto X knowledge way ahead of the phone’s announcement. And he was right about most of the stuff.

In a very short Google+ post, Wimberly simply said that a Nexus smartphone from Motorola will be launched by the end of the year, and that phone will not be a Moto X version:

[quote qtext=”Motorola will release a Nexus smartphone in Q4 (that is not the Moto X).” qperson=”” qsource=”” qposition=”center”]

Wimberly did not share other details, nor did he explain where he got this information from, but we’re certainly going to keep tabs on this particular rumor, considering his accuracy with Motorola-related stuff this year.

Motorola is already said to launch a Google Play edition of the Moto X, although it’s not clear when that will happen.

We expect the next-gen Nexus handset to arrive at some point later this year, with a next-gen Android OS version in tow, assuming that Google will continue to launch such new products towards the end of the year like it did in the past.

A Motorola Nexus? This will cause the sun to implode.

  • YoungHermit

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :( I hope this rumor isn’t true. I want a Nexus device from Sony or LG, not Motorola D:

    • Matt

      Nexus 4 is from LG…

    • brendan soliwoda

Yea, I’ve been begging for a Sony Nexus cause that would be insane. A waterproof nexus? I’m sold.

  • Zach Mauch

Though accurate with the moto x, he has had issues with his nexus/android release info. Hopefully this came from his past moto source.

  • Zach Mauch

…also, after today’s announcement, I really hope that the G2 is the next Nexus. That thing looks absolutely SICK!!!!

May not be realistic from a cost perspective though.

    • YoungHermit

Exactly! I want OIS, not a great battery! You can buy a external charger case for you Nexus 5, but can you buy an OIS ?(Then again, it might have an OIS) Let’s just hope that LG will make the next Nexus 5.

  • AndroidBrian

I really want the G2 to be a Nexus device. But if the Moto is like a Maxx HD w/ 1080p and a Maxx type battery, I’ll take that too. In Google I trust.

    • Epic Tea

      Google ftw.

  • Rapist on BAIL

As long as the next Nexus is from Motorola or Sony, I could care less.

    • Rapist on BAIL

Sony Xperia Nexus sounds fuckin good right now

  • Frank Cruz

Since LG will not be making the next Nexus5, will this Moto Nexus be considered the Nexus5?

    • Luka Mlinar

Yes. Even if they don’t call it that, we will.

  • Luka Mlinar

Oh grate, Motorola will ruin the last big hope. Now there will be no phone that i want to buy. How has it come to this?

No love for a HTC Nexus?

    • Kash Gummaraju

      I want an HTC Nexus

    • brendan soliwoda

I think HTC time for the Nexus has come and gone. They got the first nexus and I think Google’s strategy is to give the nexus opportunity to new partners rather than previous partners. If LG does make this nexus, it’ll most likely be there last one. It’s more likely we’ll see either an Xperia Nexus or a Moto Nexus, but I’m holding out for the xperia.

  • jjordan

If this is true and it probably is we can expect a 720p screen and that x8 processor to be in it…to keep a nexus phone at a 300 dollar price point it can’t have bleeding edge specs it just can’t

    • smokebomb

The Nexus 4 was bleeding edge when it came out and was still 300…

      • maxx1987

not sure 1080p screens are all that cheap yet though

        • OMGgary

Well yes, under normal circumstances a 1080p device wouldn’t be available at anywhere as low as $300, but they are selling the 2013 Nexus 7 for $229 and it has a better than 1080p (1920 x 1200). So, I don’t think it is unrealistic to think that they may be able to do a FHD phone for a hundred quid more, selling at about $329.
This is of course assuming that Google continue subsidising the Nexus devices, which they seem to be doing with the 2013 Nexus 7.

          • maxx1987

            true, i hope you’re right!

    • Sox05

The new Nexus 4 has to come with a 1080p screen and it probably will.

  • smokebomb

Unless the next nexus is 32GB of internal storage, I may have to consider the G2.

  • Jhedpredon

I think the Moto Nexus will have high specs, after all the criticisms Moto X recieved. I know Google will learn from their mistakes. Google I trust you!

    • BB BB

If its based off of a DROID then maybe it will be bleeding edge but we want POWER! at least I do.

  • jay flores

Too funny…a year ago everyone hated LG for making the Nexus lol! Moto Nexus sounds amazing…hope it has the Maxx battery and an Intel chip

    • BB BB

I sure didn’t and I bought one but yeah everyone was bashing the efff out of LG and they proved the naysayers wrong and launched a mighty beast of a phone in the G2. So let’s see what Googlerola will do.

  • Clarkkent113

For the Nexus devices, specs DO matter. It should be:

    -5.2inch 1080p display, 400+ PPI
    -Quad-core Snapdragon 800
    -3gigs RAM
-All the voice features of the Moto X
    -$299 OFF-contract

They do this right I’m selling my Note 2 and picking up the Nexus 5.

    • Jhed

    • Soein

      You’re just trolling!

    • Chris

A Nexus 5 coming with these specs i dont think it will cost 299 off contract…
But i think the Nexus 5 will be more expensive than the Nexus 4.. The same thing happened with Nexus 7 2012 and 2013.. And that because of the top quality display..
Personally i would love to see a Motorola Nexus 5, because it will have an excellent build quality, big battery and direct access to Google since they are one company now.
Dont get me wrong, LG G2 is a powerhouse, but i dont think that the build quality is better than GS3 or GS4.. At the same time i dont think that the volume/power button on the back of the device will be helpful.. I know most hands-on reviews say that its very good to have the buttons there, but i dont think its going to be mainstream

    • Edwin

I really don’t think I would buy a Nexus 5 with a 5.2″ screen. 5″ is already edging on too big,,, I think such a device would make me stick with the Nexus 4.

      • EvenInTheDarkestHour

I agree. Nexus phones do not need to push into Phablet territory. 5″ or less is a better for that line…in my opinion.

  • Kash Gummaraju

HTC needs the oppurtunity once again to make a nexus phone, seeing as whatever company releases a nexus phone becomes super popular and desired by most people. LG was nothing until the nexus 4 and optimus g were made. Samsung got a lot of popularity off of the galaxy nexus and nexus s and HTC ran on the popularity that came out of the nexus one for a very long time. Motorola became desirable due to the droid line and google buyout which instantly created rumors of motorola nexus phones. HTC needs that push again, the google play edition of the One didn’t do much to give HTC more market share.

  • Ayan Sarkar

Moto and Nexus is a recipe for disaster. Sony nexus would be really sick though!

    • brendan soliwoda

Thank you! Exactly. Who wouldn’t want a waterproof nexus with great camera technology and a triluminos display?

  • Tamadrummer94

    Two nexus? Err, nexii.

  • End in sight

Please noooooooooooo. I want a Sony nexus. I am just afraid moto will muck it up.

OK, maybe I should just hold my breath and try to trust Google.

  • BB BB

Oh No. There go the hopes of the LG G2 Nexus 5 we were drooling over yesterday. Phones with Quad Core vocal processors are awesome :-S
    Googlerola we want a: S800 + 5″+ True 1080 IPS? + 3GB Ram + 64GB + ???

  • allen

Vote up if the moto x should’v been the nexus 5. And what’s the point of a Google edition moto x? It’s basically stock with a few tweaks

    • Mandy Jhons

No way, Google is Google and HTC is HTC. Small kid in new year 2015 too.

  • brendan soliwoda

God, I hope this doesn’t turn out to be true.

  • Eric Bright

An HTC Nexus could change everything.

  • EvenInTheDarkestHour

    Down vote if you will…

If Moto starts making the Nexus line, the MotoGoogle experience will be the focus including bata testing the latest features, it is very likely the hardware will not be leading edge. But, that’s not what’s important anymore…or so Moto says.

    • jjordan

My point exactly motorola hasn’t released a 1080p smartphone ever…. not because they can’t but because they don’t see the point in it…. and I can’t see them changing that for a nexus build sorry I just can’t

  • ejdeleon

My wallet is ready. Speaking of wallets, I really want a phone where Google Wallet is enabled. Nexus FTW!

    • EvenInTheDarkestHour

It really is a cool idea. I was able to use GW once in California at a smoothie shop. Weird that the tech stores (Best Buy, and the lot) never enabled the option, in my area a least.
