Rumor: Android 4.3 coming to Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2, not Android 4.2.2

by: Chris SmithJuly 16, 2013

Galaxy Note 2 vs Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy Nexus

A new report says that Samsung is already working on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for some of its top devices, with the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 said to make the jump directly to Android 4.3 and skip Android 4.2.2.

We will remind you that this is just a rumor at this point, so don’t get too excited about it at this time, as we can’t confirm the news just yet. Temefy has it from sources close to Samsung India that the company is working on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note, but also on the Android 4.3 update for the same devices.

Android 4.2.2 was already leaked for the Galaxy S3, but so was an Android 4.3 build for the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition.

Since Google is expected to launch Android 4.3 in the near future, it would make sense to see some devices skip a Jelly Bean version in order to run the latest Android OS available. But that doesn’t mean that Samsung will necessarily choose this route.

The report also says that an Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 would arrive in November instead of July, as initially expected. If true, that would be another reason to have the handsets move directly to Android 4.3 instead.

Finally, the publication says that the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2 will all be further upgradeable to the next major Android version – supposedly Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie – but not all of them will receive it at the same time.

We’ll be back with more details about software updates for these particular handsets once we have them.

  • MasterMuffin

It makes sense, because the differences are so small that why not. I’m just having hard time believing that Samsung would update my s3 to 5.0!

    • Blowntoaster

They had better. the hardware should still be more than capable enough to handle it.

      • kl4q

You know it’s not about hardware but about Samsung willing to update its “old” devices.

        • Bone

Samsung does 2-year cycles for flagships, so KLP should be in the time-frame. If not, unofficial then.

        • John-Phillip Saayman

Apparently about the slower s4 sales as well.

      • MasterMuffin

It is and s2 got jb too so I believe again

    • John-Phillip Saayman

I think there’s a high chance it would make it to KLP

  • Mike Bastable

  • Jean-Francois Messier

And what about the Galaxy Note Tablet ?

  • John-Phillip Saayman

Why why why, it’s just waiting and waiting. Just give us s3 users something

    • Bryan Sandoval

Its OK, s3 is fine with or without it. Does your run slow or something ?

      • John-Phillip Saayman

No. It’s fine. But to keep me interested for two years I need some new features and look. It’s getting quite boring to wait while the s4 has it.

        • Bryan Sandoval

True I see your point. It does get kinda boring to wait sometimes

          • LiveTrash

I know a phone is more than just a phone now. But after all… It is just a phone. Be happy you have one and be patient.

        • reznorfan0

root it and run custom roms. You’ll never get bored.

        • reznorfan0

root it and run custom roms. You’ll never get bored.

        • Mike Palmer

You know there’s loads of launchers that do all kind of things that can keep you busy and change the look of your phone, and even give you new features!

          • John-Phillip Saayman

I have Apex launcher. But still.

    • Dan

Don’t wait for Sammy man, there’s tons of Roms out there , currently running Carbonrom 4.2.2 on my S3 for months and it simply crushes touchwiz bloatware by miles

      • John-Phillip Saayman

Yeah I know I’m just scared. I don’t know about flashing. Scared I break something. Also I like Samsung features so I would want them

      • stewartsoda

That’s like, just your opinion man.

I like CM10.1, but the TW camera and AVRCP 1.3 in the bluetooth stack keep me on TouchWiz.

        • Dan

Each to their own I guess

      • ankit

Check out the chaos rom for s3 . I am running it with siyah kernel and it is super awesome!

  • Arne Hermansen

If thats true i be happy, :)

  • chapman1969

Well here we go again for us gs3 owners this waiting game is old so come on Samsung make your customers happy again with 4.3 soon or they will go too htc

    • Jason Yuen

      root. flash. profit.

      • Yep. We’ll have it one way or another.

    • Jaun Lombard

Why? HTC brings updates to their old phone a lot slower than Samsung…Plus there is no rumers of HTC to update to 4.3!

    • Mike Palmer

HTC is known to be the worst for giving updates, good luck with that lol

      • Benjamin Pavel

Did you know HTC was the first vendor that bringed ICS to the devices ?
And has updated to more than 11 devices to ICS where Samsung only updated S2 variants, even S1 didn’t receive the ICS.

        • Mike Palmer

It’s spelled brought not bringed…… and it’s common knowledge HTC leaves is old devices behind and had been one of its main faults over the last couple years.

          • Benjamin Pavel

Yea it is spelled brought because people like you when they don’t get the update they immediately jump ships.
And Samsung is the same they also didn’t update low end devices to ICS only recently they were updated because they’ve got famous (and loaded with money) when was S3 released.
Thus the reason why some Gingerbread devices were update directly to JB skipping ICS.

          • Mike Palmer

I know people that still have HTC like my uncle and his phone is not even 2 years old and HTC hasn’t ever updated it and he is still stuck with Gingerbread, how long is it gonna take them to update it as your saying he would be bailing out if he ever change phones because that update is never coming for him. Even their new phone the HTC One didn’t come out with the newest Android version.

  • Joe

They have never skipped an update before to jump to the newest version. I doubt they will start now.

    • nawa

No, they did on a low-end device. Galaxy Ace 2 was upgraded from 2.3 directly to 4.1.2.

    • Jokesy

Samsung upgraded Galaxy S Advance and Galaxy Ace 2 from Gingerbread 2.3.6 to 4.1.2. They both skipped ICS

  • Maher Salti

If it’s true, they’re making a smart move compared to other OEM’s

  • Keynode Green

    Would gladly welcome this

  • Umar Abbas

I am getting tired of waiting 5.0 for my Note 2

    • Grman Rodriguez

You can… You know… Enjoy your phone as it is while you wait

  • chapman1969

Well right now Samsung an’t doing any better then htc I will keep my gs3 though.

  • Alcas

If samsung delays their updates we will switch to other great phones simple.

  • klp

4.3 is fake, klp is coming in the fall

    • John-Phillip Saayman

Would be interesting If 4.3 is fake.

  • WELO

totally fake, still there is no any device with 4.3 neither AOSP ones, so probability is almost null

  • John-Phillip Saayman

Haven’t we gotten so obsessed with upgrading? I am speaking for myself here and reading all these posts I realise I am so obsessed with getting new software. I check almost every week for news. I almost just want to get a Nexus device because I want it so soon. I feel like I’m on something old. Sometimes I wish I could just forget about it… *sigh*
    Hi, I’m Jp, and I’m an updateaholic…

  • chapman1969

I know htc will go straight to lime pie not 4.3 that’s why there’s no rumors of 4.3 dont get me wrong I like my gs3 just getting tired of waiting like everyone else.

  • Mr Me

Hello ppl can someone help with a link to get a good working android 4.2.2 ? Possibly official if there is
The leak one I have the gps is not functioning properly and the float keypad isn’t fictional and beside the entire system stalls

    • zubairali

Try s4 pure experience. Only problem is with its battery life otherwise its a good rom

  • Aziz

    Just rumor

  • Hasnain Khattak

Oneday, there will be rumor of upgrading to 4.4 instead of 4.3

  • Felonious Drunk

Except for that fact that 4.2.2 got released for both those devices months ago as confirmed by Samsung themselves.

It’s the carriers that are busy ruining it.

  • lollicup04

After updating my SGN 1 to 4.2.1 Jellybean my phone has become extremely slow and laggy. Was this intentionally done by At&t? What happened to the butter project that was suppose to be introduced on jellybean? I want my butter! :/

I feel like I have been scammed. I know that I wasn’t forced to upgrade to jellybean. But if given the choice why wouldn’t I? It would only make sense to in order to receive all the benefits. At least on gingerbread the phone still functioned with minimal problems.

For some reason it also seems like some functions in the S Note app have been removed. If this is what Samsung thinks that by removing functionality in firmware updates encourages people to upgrade their phone to the Note 2 they are wrong! If anything it just pisses customers off and makes us choose a different brand.

Now my phone has been rendered useless. I receive texts almost an hour later that was meant to be received sooner. When opening apps it force closes and for some reason whenever I try to download and try to install new apps my phone constantly says Package Invalid or not enough memory.

Even though my phone has plenty of space to spare. When launching the camera application it takes 10 seconds to open and when unlocking the lock screen seems like a chore because it is so slow now.

Has anyone experienced this on their SGN 1? Is this what I get for being a early adopter? I know that most people have a SGN 2 instead. No one really cares about the original one which is messed up. Anyways if anyone is also experiencing this and have found a solution please reply to me.

Rooting the phone, Installing crap every day doesn’t make any sense. I wanna use my device to it’s full potential without the use of cheap shit. Android released an update fixing bugs and security holes in 4.2.2. Delaying it would put all s3 and note customers at risk. On the other hand, this incident shows how ridiculously profit motive samsung is,They are looking for a short term satisfaction. forcing products down people’s throats. I say that i will give up on all future samsung products! And that i will!
Feeling annoyed, fed up, frustrated, of my 599.

  • danish

    Always late .just waiting waiting

  • petermurphy

for anyone thats wondering my carrier released an update saying the note 2 will skip 4.2.2 look here in the 3rd row

  • Roose Bolton

VERY BAD SAMSUNG!! Official upadates are important for all developers!! Futhermore We would not need roms if samsung did their work better!! Too much time waiting the firmware android 4.2.2, app cam of s4 and status bar transparent….. So, When will arrive 4.3??? Next year?? many delays and their customers are tired of samsung! My next phone will be a nexus!

  • David Simms

O man this needs to be set in stone already

  • Jahnu Gogoi

  • Tvrtko

S3 hardware is capable of runing KLP and if google optimise it so good touchwiz should be smooth too if not i will root and put custom rom :D Belive me Exynos 4412 Quad core and Mali 400 and 1gb ram is powerful and it is good like new device i would chose S3 over Xperia Z every time :D Did you see Z screen ? If no better not :D
