There is a big rumor floating around that one of the future builds of Android will be dubbed ‘Ice Cream’.
For those that remember, Android 1.5 was named Cupcake and was based on Linux Kernel 2.6.27. The next major iteration was called Donut (version 1.6) and then came Eclair (2.0/2.1). Froyo brings us up to date with Android version 2.2, but rumor has it that Gingerbread, potentially based on Linux Kernel 2.6.33 or .34, is just around the corner. Of course, we have no real idea whether this will be Android 2.5 or 3.0. Indeed, the version numbers are anyone’s guess until Google adopt a yearly or half yearly update cycle that falls into an integer and 0.5 numbering scheme (e.g. 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5). It is alleged that Google are doing just that right now.
This brings us full circle to the fact that we have no way of knowing whether Google Android Ice Cream will version 4.0 or something entirely else. Remember, this code name is still unconfirmed. Personally, I think I could do better since Ice Cream is similar to Froyo. Boring!
