Rogers allowing HTC Dream owners to upgrade to HTC Magic?

Word out of Canada is that Rogers feels for those early adopters of the HTC Dream.  In the wake of the news that the device won’t be upgraded past Android 1.5, Rogers has unofficially announced that they will offer an upgrade to Dream users to switch to the HTC Magic, which will receive at least Android 2.1.  No word yet on any details including whether or not users will have to succumb to a new multi-year contract or not.

The official statement from Rogers is this:

“It’s great to hear that everyone is pleased by HTC’s agreement to upgrade Magic to 2.1. We pushed hard on your behalf and are pleased with that part. When it comes to Dream, we share in your frustration that the device does not have the required on-board memory for an upgrade. We’ve reviewed this internally and believe that Dream users should be able to have the same HTC Android experience as those who purchased the Magic.  So, we are offering our HTC Dream customers a limited time opportunity to upgrade from their current HTC Dream device to the HTC Magic.”

This is surely great news to Rogers customers and a fresh and welcomed idea for other carriers worldwide to follow.  With 2.1 being such a large leap over 1.5, the upgrade would be hard not to take, even if one had to get used to the lack of a physical keyboard.  Tell us what you think.

Are you kidding me? I obviously failed to pay close attention to the differences in cpu’s between the two. I have the dream and although it can’t be upgraded, I think it would be hard to go without the physical keyboard. At the same time, I haven’t had the opportunity to try 2.1 myself, so I’m left wondering if going for a magic and 2.1 would be worth the hassel and loss of the keyboard ( which I find is very comfortable for not just typing, but also having the full screen viewable and un-ubstructed etc. ). I’m gonna have to read up on the differences between 1.5 and 2.1.

Too bad rogers wasn’t offering replacement dreams with new cpu’s instead.

The process is not so clear cut. I walked into a Rogers store last June to buy a Blackberry and was sold on the Dream. The store manager practically drooled over the Dream and ignored the Magic when I asked about it. I was promised they were the same phone and would work with any software upgrades over the course of the 3 year contract. I liked the Dream because of the physical keyboard. I have loved it since and really enjoy the whole Android experience.

So I learn of the upgrade offer online, Rogers never contacted me, not even to warn me that the Dream could not make 911 calls (another issue). I call Rogers wast old the offer was on hold and call next week. I do more research online and learn the offer ended January 26th. I call back and after going through two reps and 30 minutes on the phone and a lot of run around I am promised the upgrade. I am given an code and asked to call back when the Magic is back in stock. I ask when that would be and there wa sno answer, I just need to keep calling back. Pain in the ass.

This is kind of ridiculous.. “Join the revolution, buy an HTC Magic”. If Rogers would have something other than wax between their two ears, they would know that the HTC Magic != HTC Dream. I have fat fingers which is why I bought the HTC Dream… if I wanted a completely touch phone, I would of gone with the iPhone instead. The replacement they’re offering might have more on-board memory, but is in my opinion, definitely not an equivalent of what it’s replacing.

You guys are lucky, vendors in the UK don’t care if you bought a device which is not powerful enough. Tough luck they say contract signed. IMHO I don’t believe the magic has the power to use 2.1 properly either.
