Red Nexus 5 currently out of stock, but will it return?

by: Andrew GrushFebruary 10, 2014

After plenty of leaks and rumors, the red version of the Nexus 5 arrived to the Google Play store last week, timed perfectly for Valentine’s Day. As to be expected, there was plenty of demand for the fetching red model and over the weekend the handset’s status shifted from in stock to “We are out of Inventory” for both 16 and 32GB variants (at least in the U.S. market).

Of course, we’ve seen this before with the Play store: something will change to “out of stock”, and then hours or days later it will return with a shipping time that has slipped further and further away. Still, so far, the “check back soon” status remains in effect, and has us wondering if maybe the red version was truly a limited edition model that Google doesn’t plan to keep around long-term.

At least for now, it appears that if you were planning on picking up the red Nexus 5, you might have missed the boat. Then again, perhaps this is just a minor hiccup and more inventory is on the way. Either way, considering the apparent success of the red Nexus 5, it’s possible that Google will eventually bring us more colors down the road — even if the red model is indeed over and done with.

Did you manage to get your hands on the red Nexus 5? Would you like to see Google introduce more color variants in the future, or does such a move only serve to frustrate existing Nexus owners? Let us know what you think in the comments.

I wish the actual device is as red as the phone in the picture. Wtf Google…

If you believe MKBHD (Marques Brownlee, a Youtuber), the device is as red as his channel banner, which is pretty red (#E42529 in hex)

Not enough news today? The red Nexus 5 will be back and will be available at the end of this month in the Netherlands, which suggests it should be available in other countries as well. Do some research instead of posting crap like this.

If the Nexus line is dying, why do the Nexuses (?) keep selling out?

Has anyone tried the Poetic bumpers for these? I’m wonder how the color of the red bumper would match the red of the phone. Maybe I’d be better off getting a black bumper…

I managed to get my hands on a 32GB model, I opened it and to my suprise the phone was defiently bright red. I took it out and noticed that in different lighting situations it can look a pink red or a red orange. Also when I took the phone out of the box there was a dent on the back right hand side, and on top of the phone there is a significant gap between the backplate and phone. Google has been very proactive in replacing my device, he also said they will be getting more of the “Bright Red” in and they keep stock for replacements.

I was just able to order a red 16 GB Nexus 5 this morning from Google Play. I checked the page this morning, and it said ‘shipping now’, but when I tried to order, it immediately got yanked from my cart. I kept refreshing, and eventually it was back in stock. I now have a confirmed order with a shipping date of 2/17!
