POLL: What is the Perfect Screen Size for a Smartphone?

October 27, 2011

Over the first three years of Android’s existence, we’ve seen screen sizes range from 3-inches to now, one with a shocking 5.3 inch display. For me, I am still getting used to the 4.3-inch screen on my HTC Sensation, which I think is a bit too big, coming from the original Motorola Droid and the iPhone 3GS, which were 3.7 and 3.5 inch screen respectively. But now, we have devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note that feature a 5.3 inch Super HD AMOLED display, which is almost too big to hold in your hands. Almost.

The way I use my phone is with one hand, holding it while using my thumb to type most of the time. So, having a phone that can fit comfortably in my hand without being afraid of dropping it is a big plus for me. Now, what I’d really like is a phone that can change screen sizes. Say you want a 4″ device today, then you want a 7-9 inch tablet for tonight to watch a movie on Netfix, then back to a 4″ device for tomorrow. Now that would be awesome right? Think Asus Padfone, folks.

Anything over 4 inches is too darn big. I had an HD2 for awile and couldn’t stand it. I could barely fit it in my pocket and when I could, I couldn’t carry anything else. 3.7 is perfect, for movies and games, I’ll use my tablet, but I don’t want something that can’t figure out what it is.

I have a Droid X at 4.3. Use every bit of that real estate. But I have checked out a 4.5 and 4.7….and if the phone isn’t too thick….they are great. With ICS destroying the OS lines between smartphones and tablets….I would say 4.5 to 4.7 will become the norm. Sales numbers are certainly tilting to phones over 4.0 inches

I think what all this really comes down to is the bezel. If we had a true edge to edge display with a 5″ display (who many 5 inches is too large), it would only be about the size of the EVO 4G.

I think companies need to get focused on giving consumers more display and less bezel on all sides of the screen. This is one of the reason why the iPhone was so disappointing, it has two huge blocks of black space above and below the screen. If they would have put a larger display and kept the same phone size it would have been much less disappointing.

4.7 inch just like the galaxy nexus will be perfect for me! I always found my 4.3 inch droid x on the small side.

4.3 with hardware buttons, 4.6 with screen buttons. Big phones, but that gives more space behind the screen for hardware.

I think the 4.5 inch size big enough for 1024×768 pixel resolution (for my eyes), and not too big to hold it, (for my palm)

    4.7 is perfect

5.2 without a physical keyboard, but I would anyhow prerfer my amazing Xperia Pro with a 3.7 high resolution screen and a lovely slide out keyboard ;-)

5.2 inch edge to edge touch-screen (like on the Motorola Defy), 1280×720 720p/1080p resolution is the perfect screen for a Android 4.0 smartphone which is thin (like the Motorola Droid Razr).

the 4in on the GSI was pretty nice and every time I’ve held a 4.3in, it feels too big, even in my large hands. I feel like somewhere in between those 2 sizes would be perfect but I’m going against my better judgement and going for the Galaxy Nexus anyway cause it looks so friggin sweet.
